Seattle Mariners Betting - More Of The Same From Seattle

Posted by Dale “Skip” Lalonde on 4/4/2012 4:31:43 PM

The Seattle Mariners offer a clear choice to baseball bettors this season, but it's the kind of clear choice that Mariner fans won't be very happy with. It's going to be a long summer in Seattle.

Seattle Mariners

If you are interested in betting on baseball this season, you won't have to do too much guesswork with the Seattle Mariners. Of all the teams in Major League Baseball, only a few are extremely likely to finish in last place in their division. The Houston Astros will bring up the rear in the National League Central. The Baltimore Orioles are highly likely to finish last in the American League East. The Mariners are probably the best last-place pick in the American League West. First of all, before the Houston Astros join the A.L. West in future seasons, the A.L. West is still a four-team division, and that leaves the Mariners buried alongside the Oakland Athletics in this part of the junior circuit.

The A.L. West has gotten a lot tougher in the offseason, but in Texas and Los Angeles. The Rangers added Yu Darvish to a team that has already won the past two American League pennants, reinforcing their quality and their credentials so that they could make another push for the brass ring. The Angels gained St. Louis Cardinal slugger Albert Pujols, beefing up their lineup and creating a level of enthusiasm that hasn't existed in the organization since it made the playoffs in 2009.

Seattle and Oakland are perpetually being left behind in this division, unable to land big-ticket free agents or – if they do get them – retain them for very long. Seattle's brief relationship with starting pitcher Cliff Lee a few seasons ago embodied the Mariners' lack of credibility as a franchise. Nobody who wants to play for a championship team wants to play in the Pacific Northwest, a fact that is undercutting the Mariners in the long run.

The M's are a clear target in the eyes of sports betting experts, not because of their virtues but because of their manifest impotence at the plate. The Mariners averaged just 3.4 runs per game last season, a horrible average in its own right and the worst in Major League Baseball. However, the fact that the Mariners nudged out the San Francisco Giants (3.5 runs per game) for the worst runs-per-game average in the sport is that much more unacceptable when one realizes that the Mariners play in the American League, with the designated hitter.

No American League team should score fewer than four runs per game if it wants to dream of being even moderately competitive. The Mariners won only 67 games last season – that's not moderately competitive.

When you do your homework and assess your sports bet on this team, you'll find that little has changed from past seasons. Ichiro Suzuki now hits third in the order, moving from the leadoff spot, but Chone Figgins – a drag on this batting order throughout the past two seasons – is in the leadoff position. Justin Smoak and Dustin Ackley are two fine young hitters, but if they're the best power hitters on the team (and they are), that's a huge problem. The Mariners have superb pitching with Felix Hernandez anchoring the rotation, but if they can't score, they won't win more than 75 games at most.
