Texas Rangers Betting Tips – Rangers Appear To Be On The Decline Heading In To 2013

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 2/24/2013 6:05:21 PM

After putting together back-to-back American League Championship seasons, it looked as though the third time may finally be the charm for the Texas Rangers in 2012. After a great start, the Rangers were 52-34 by the All-Star break, and appeared destined to make the playoffs. However, things took a sudden sports betting turn at the end of the regular season, and after conceding the division lead to the Oakland Athletics in the final week, Texas was officially dismissed from the postseason in the one-game Wild Card play-in by the surprise Baltimore Orioles. As bad as it got last year, there aren’t many signs things are about to get better in 2013. The Rangers lost one of the MVP’s in Josh Hamilton, in addition to Mike Napoli and Michael Young, and while Joakim Soria should help their bullpen, it appears as though Texas is a team on the decline heading in to this season.

After years of contending for the division crown, it had to be frustrating for general manager Jon Daniels to watch two of his biggest stars leave the club only to fail to sign either Zack Greinke or acquire Justin Upton. The Rangers finished last year with the third-best run differential in the majors but struggled when it mattered the most, and now it will come back to haunt them as the online sportsbook window to bring home a championship may have closed. The offense certainly takes a hit with the losses of Hamilton, Napoli, and Young, leaving Adrian Beltre and Nelson Cruz as the most important offensive players. Beltre is no longer protected and with Cruz’s name suddenly linked to reports of PED use, Texas could find its offense taking a major hit in 2013. AJ Pierzynski will need to hold his own in the batter’s box on both sides of the ball, while Lance Berkman will be pushed to see if there is anything left in the tank.

Unlike in past online betting years, it seems as though the Rangers’ biggest strength will be their pitching, with a solid rotation and an improved bullpen. Of course, Texas needs Yu Darvish to live up to his potential and pitch more consistent baseball, and if he does it will set their rotation up wonderfully with Derek Holland and Matt Harrison filling out the top three, and then a ton of options including Alexi Ogando, Robbie Ross, and Neftali Feliz. Soria is another option to help set up and assist Joe Nathan in the bullpen, making Texas one of the deeper teams in terms of talented arms.

When you consider what the team went through in the offseason with subtracting two key players while failing to add a superstar, it’s hard to imagine the Rangers take a step forward in 2013. Texas will rely even more on its pitching until they figure out what to do with three or potentially four key hitters from last year’s order, and with the rest of the division improving on paper, there will be even less room for error. The Rangers’ window to deliver a world championship may have already closed, and it will be interesting to see whether the team is able to take one last run in 2013.

Prediction: 90-72, 3rd in the AL West
