Tigers Red Sox Betting Predictions – Detroit Takes Two Of Three In Boston

Posted by Dale “Skip” Lalonde on 7/26/2012 6:24:37 PM

Sports betting sharps following Boston keep waiting for the Red Sox to make a run for the wild card, and they’re still very much in the running, but time is starting to creep up on them and the panic button, if it hasn’t already been pressed, is definitely on the horizon. Detroit comes to town on Monday and the Tigers will pile a little more pressure on the Red Sox, who will hear it from their home fans for at least the first two games of the series.

What: MLB Betting
When: Monday, July 30th – Wednesday, August 1st
Where: Fenway Park, Boston, MA
Pick: Detroit Tigers

Monday, 7:10 PM ET - Max Scherzer (10-5, 4.49) vs. Clay Buchholz (8-3, 4.93)

Both of these pitchers have been the beneficiaries of some great run support: Buchholz is third in the American League in that category, while Scherzer is sixth. Scherzer is 4-0 in his last five starts, but only once during that time has he allowed more than two runs in an outing and an earlier win over the Red Sox took his record to 1-2 in five starts against them with a 9.82 ERA.  Strangely, he has been decent at Fenway in two starts, going 1-0 with a 2.92 ERA. Buchholz was hammered in his first start of 2012 against the Tigers for seven runs in four innings, but he is 1-1 in seven starts against Detroit with a 3.83 ERA. His ERA at home is slightly better than on the road (4.83 as opposed to 5.06).

This could be a high-scoring game that goes to the bullpen, but the edge is going to go to Scherzer and the Tigers as he has been solid at Fenway, even though there is a small sample size. Stick with the visitors here.

MLB Betting Pick: Detroit Tigers

Tuesday, 7:10 PM ET – Justin Verlander (11-5, 2.42) vs. Josh Beckett (5-9, 4.57)

The reigning Cy Young winner has allowed two runs in 16.0 innings since he was embarrassed at the All-Star Game, giving up five runs in the first inning and the American League would never recover, which means it could be a long half-season for anyone that faces Verlander, who is 0-1 in two starts against the Red Sox in 2012 despite a 3.21 ERA. Overall, Verlander is 3-3 in nine starts against the Red Sox with a 3.22 ERA, and he is 2-2 in six starts in Boston with an ERA of 3.80. Beckett has given up four runs or more in three of his last four starts and has won just once in his last 10 starts. He has lost twice to the Tigers in 2012, taking his record against them to 3-4 in eight starts with a 3.86 ERA and Beckett is now 2-5 in nine starts at Fenway with a 4.55 ERA.

Beckett has been known as a big-game pitcher, but it seems as though he is well on the downside of his career and that doesn’t bode well for Boston’s chances down the stretch because they need an ace badly; it was supposed to be either Beckett or Jon Lester, and neither is working out. Take Verlander and the Tigers in the second game of this series.

MLB Betting Pick: Detroit Tigers

Wednesday, 7:00 PM ET – Rick Porcello (7-5, 4.40) vs. Aaron Cook (2-3, 3.50)

Porcello is fifth in the run-support category for American League pitchers and while he is 3-0 in his last five starts, he was bailed out by his offense to take no-decisions on two occasions. The Red Sox haven’t been kind to Porcello, who is 0-2 in three starts against Boston with a 10.80 ERA and he was ejected in his lone trip to Fenway, sparking a brawl with then-Boston player Kevin Youkilis as a rookie. Cook gave up two homers to Toronto and is 0-2 in his last three starts, some of which was his fault, and some of which was due to either a lackluster offense and poor defensive work.

Even though Cook has an ERA of 4.71 at home as opposed to a 1.80 on the road, the Red Sox will show a little pride and try to avoid a sweep on Wednesday, especially with a game that is being nationally televised. Porcello just doesn’t pitch well against the Red Sox, who will strike early and often to roll to a win in your online betting picks.

MLB Betting Pick: Boston Red Sox
