Tigers vs Rangers Odds - Tiger woes will continue in Texas

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 4/24/2012 9:51:36 AM
MLB oddsTonight’s Tigers vs Rangers odds kick off a series between teams at major crossroads. Both the Tigers and Rangers started strong in the first half only to fade and let their division rivals back into the races. The Rangers, however, have rebounded in a big way as of late. Can the Tigers do the same and hold onto their division lead in MLB betting this week?

Tigers vs Rangers odds: Tigers’ starters struggle on the road

  • Galarraga hot, but no one can touch rookie Hunter right now
  • Never bet on Vicente Padilla
  • Verlander’s split stats show alarming trends

Tonight, 8:05 p.m. ET
Armando Galarraga (5-8, 4.82) vs Tommy Hunter (2-1, 2.17)

What on Earth is going on with Tommy Hunter? The unknown rookie keeps surprising teams – not to mention offshore sportsbook odds makers – with his soft arsenal. He’s even shut down Boston and Tampa Bay. Every time I pick him to come back to Earth, he baffles another team. For now, we have to assume he’ll keep pitching well against teams he faces for the first time, so his Tigers vs Rangers odds look good.

However, Detroit’s Armando Galarraga is among baseball’s hottest pitchers right now. He has a 2.66 ERA this month and has allowed one earned run in three of four starts. Since both starters aren’t household names, you can take advantage and bet under the total tonight. In the end, go with Texas; Galarraga isn’t great on the road and Texas has the better offense.

MLB betting pick: Rangers

Tuesday, July 28, 8:05 p.m. ET
Luke French (1-1, 2.22) vs Vicente Padilla (7-5, 4.67)

The Tigers’ answer to Tommy Hunter, Luke French has been an equally pleasant surprise for Detroit and betting fans alike this season. He keeps the ball in the park; he even did it in his lone start at Yankee Stadium. However, all his other strong performances have come against weak lineups, so you have to tread carefully with his Tigers vs Rangers odds.

Luckily for French and the Tigers, Vicente Padilla sucks. His home ERA is 6.00 and five current Tigers regulars have a career OPS over 1.000 against him. Don’t overthink this one; go with the road team and you may get some slight underdog value.

MLB betting pick: Tigers

Wednesday, July 29, 8:05 p.m. ET
Justin Verlander (11-5, 3.12) vs Scott Feldman (9-3, 3.59)

Careful with Wednesday’s Tigers vs Rangers odds. It’s natural to pounce on Cy Young contender Justin Verlander, but he’s actually a split-stat nightmare. His home ERA: 1.15. His away ERA: 4.76. Day: 1.74. Night: 4.24. Career pre-All-Star break: 3.48. Post: 4.72. Every split stat tells you that Verlander is a trap pick. Even his dominance in two starts against Texas this year (1-0, 1.64 ERA, 16 K, 11 IP) came at home.

Scott Feldman has churned out six straight quality starts and has beaten the Yankees, Rays and Angels, so he’s a safe play.

MLB betting pick: Rangers
