More Teams Enjoy Opening Home Stands This Tuesday

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 4/8/2013 7:22:10 PM

In week two of a Major League Baseball season, the teams that spent week one on the road get to celebrate their first home stands of the campaign. How will that affect performance levels?

Game 1: Toronto Blue Jays @ Detroit Tigers – Tuesday, April 9

Sport betting lines will probably favor the Tigers in this game for two overarching reasons: First, Toronto has struggled out of the blocks, stumbling in its attempt to deal with the pressure of being expected to make the playoffs. This has not been part of the landscape in Toronto since the 1993 world championship season. The Blue Jays are in an adjustment period; they are not accustomed to facing the kind of scrutiny that has come their way over the offseason. The other thing to realize about this game is that Detroit starter Anibal Sanchez was very good in his season-opening game last week against the Minnesota Twins. Sanchez has really come of age for the Tigers and has made himself into a strong part of the team’s starting rotation. Detroit swings the bats better at home than it does on the road, even though Comerica Park is a pitcher-friendly ball yard. Take the Tigers over the Jays on Tuesday afternoon.

MLB Betting Pick: Detroit

Game 2: Los Angeles Dodgers @ San Diego Padres – Tuesday, April 9

When the best online betting sites tackle this clash, they will view it as a coin flip. Josh Beckett, the starter for the Dodgers, is not the same pitcher who helped the Boston Red Sox win the 2007 World Series. He has regressed since then, in large part due to inconsistent health and the wear and tear that accompany a high career workload. San Diego starter Clayton Richard can reasonably be expected to outperform Beckett. Yes, Los Angeles has better hitters than San Diego does, so this is a coin-flip matchup. However, the Padres are playing their home opener and will probably feed off the momentum provided by the occasion. Give a slight edge to San Diego here.

MLB Betting Pick: San Diego

Game 3: Chicago White Sox @ Washington Nationals – Tuesday, April 9

This is not quite high-stakes poker, at least not this early in a 162-game season. You do not see a lot of desperate baseball played in the month of April. Yet, there's still a certain urgency attached to a meeting between a team that finished second in its division last season (Chicago) and a team that won its division (Washington). The White Sox have more to prove, but on the other hand, Washington wants to show that last season was not a fluke. The Nationals have incentive to return to the form that marked their ascendancy in 2012. The pitching matchup is an excellent one. Jake Peavy is a tough veteran pitcher for Chicago, one that should be able to get a lot of big outs for the White Sox in this game. However, Gio Gonzalez won 21 games last season and is operating at the peak of his powers. He will out-duel Peavy and lead Washington to a narrow win in a low-scoring affair.

MLB Betting Pick: Washington
