Tips For Betting On Boston Red Sox – The 2013 Season will be Rough for Red Sox Fans

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 2/14/2013 6:20:23 PM

For the past few years now, the online betting world has watched the Boston Red Sox organization descend into chaos. During manager Terry Francona’s last couple of seasons, the team was consistently falling short of its post-season goals and the extremely overpaid starting pitching rotation never delivered. Then the Red Sox experienced the single worst September collapse in AL history and Francona’s days were numbered. When it was revealed that pitchers who were not scheduled to pitch in games were in the clubhouse during games drinking beer, eating fast food and playing cards, Francona was immediately dismissed.

Also gone from the Red Sox organization was long-time general manager Theo Epstein. He had moved on to Chicago and took any semblance of order with him. Just when the sports betting world thought that the Red Sox would regroup and bring in a manager that would give the organization stability, the Sox decided to hire Bobby Valentine. That decision plunged the organization deeper into chaos and should have been a decision that Boston brass regretted the moment they made it. The Red Sox wound up dumping $250 million in salaries when it made a huge trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers to get rid of unproductive players such as Josh Beckett, Adrian Gonzales and Carl Crawford. Valentine was fired at season’s end and the team was in limbo yet again.

The sportsbook experts do like the hiring of new manager John Farrell, but Farrell does not have much to work with in 2013. Long time Red Sox such as Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury have been wildly inconsistent as of late. Designated hitter David Ortiz finally had a productive season in 2012 and was rewarded with a new contract. But the Red Sox starting rotation has been left in shambles with very little to fill in the empty spaces.

The Red Sox start the season with starters Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz and John Lackey still on the rotation. All three of those starters are still trying to get their form back after injuries last season. Lackey may be the most prepared of the three because he is fully recovered from Tommy John surgery. But the rest of the Boston pitching staff is in disarray. Boston did not go after any high profile pitching free agents in the offseason, which means that Red Sox Nation can expect prospects to fill out the starting rotation.

Whether the organization wants to admit it or not, this will be a rebuilding year for Boston. The team needs to start bringing in younger players to replace the ones who are aging, and it needs to focus on creating a starting rotation that can actually produce. The competition in the AL East will be extremely hot this season as the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays look to compete along with the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays. But the Red Sox does not have the guns to stay in the race in 2013 and will find itself getting left behind.

2013 Prediction: Fifth in the AL East
