Tips For Betting On Cubs Cardinals – Cardinals Look To Continue Climb

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 7/18/2012 4:30:54 PM

At the midway mark of the 2011 MLB online sports betting season, few baseball experts predicted that the St. Louis Cardinals would come on strong and challenge for a National League playoff spot, never mind a World Series berth. The Cardinals surprised nearly everyone but themselves in the second half, and rode the momentum of a strong finish to the regular season all the way to the World Series, where they upset the Texas Rangers. St. Louis is trailing two teams in the NL Central once again coming out of this year’s break, but with more than two months to go on the schedule there is plenty of time for the defending champions to close the gap, beginning with a three-game series at home against the rival Chicago Cubs.

Despite the fact that the Cubs are 10 games back of the Cardinals and 17 games below .500 overall, these teams have split it eight meetings so far this season with four wins each. If St. Louis is going to have any chance at making a run at the NL Central crown, it will have to do better within its own division, including its games against the teams at the bottom of the standings in Chicago and the Houston Astros. The Cubs are rumored to be entertaining offers for Ryan Dempster, who has pitched 33 straight innings without giving up a run, but he is unlikely to move before Friday’s scheduled start. Fortunately for the Cardinals they will have their best starter in to counter Dempster with Kyle Lohse getting the nod. Lohse is 9-2 with a 2.80 ERA, and has not allowed more than two earned runs in five straight starts.

Although St. Louis trails both the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates in the NL Central, it still owns the best NL run differential mainly due to an offense that ranks fifth in the majors in runs scored. The Cardinals will look to tee off on veteran Matt Garza in the second of the three-game set, as the 28-year old comes off his best start of the season after pitching seven-shutout innings in a win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. St. Louis’ starter Jake Westbrook has spent the last month getting his ERA down from 4.27 to 3.82, but he could be vulnerable coming off the All-Star break after consecutive baseball betting losses.

The loss of ace Chris Carpenter and the struggles of Adam Wainwright in his return from surgery have hurt the Cardinals’ stock, but Lohse and Lance Lynn have been stellar in their absence and a big reason the team is where it is in the standings. Lynn will look to add another win to his 11-4 record after allowing just one earned run over his last 13 innings to get his ERA down to 3.17, and as long as he doesn’t suffer a meltdown he should be a lock to get the sportsbook victory. Cubs’ starter Travis Wood allowed eight earned runs over 4.2 innings his last time on the mound, and that was against the Miami Marlins.
