Tips On Betting White Sox Rays – Tampa Bay Take Final Two Games At Home

Posted by Dale “Skip” Lalonde on 5/29/2012 2:56:42 PM

Online betting sharps are really getting into the Major League Baseball season now as we head into June and all the rust should be gone by now, which means teams are starting to make moves. The Chicago White Sox defeated Tampa Bay on the road on Monday in the first game of their three-game set, but look for the Rays to avenge that loss and take the last two.

What: MLB Betting
When: Tuesday, 7:10 PM ET; Wednesday, 1:10 PM ET
Where: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, FL

Philip Humber (1-2, 5.80) vs. James Shields (6-2, 3.63)

Humber leapt into the consciousness of MLB betting sharps with his perfect game in Seattle, but all that does is illustrate the fickle nature of the game as he has been all over the place since then with three solid outings and three poor ones. He gave up five earned runs in 4.1 innings against Minnesota, but Humber was bailed out by his offense and took a no-decision in an 11-8 victory. The 29-year-old righty has made three appearances against the Rays, starting in two of them, and he has posted a 1-1 mark with a 3.78 ERA in that time. On the road, Humber is 1-1 in three starts with a 5.09 ERA, counting the perfect game, but he is 0-1 in two outings at Tropicana Field.

Shields was unfortunate to take a no-decision in a 5-4 extra-inning win over Toronto as he gave up three runs (two earned) on seven hits over 7.1 innings, striking out 10 and walking one, but his defense struggled to make plays and took him out of the running for his seventh win of the season. While Shields hasn’t been lights out this season, he has always given his team a chance to win and that is all you can ask out of a starter, but he seems to be trending upwards, although he still gives up a few too many home runs; nine, to be exact. The 30-year-old is 3-2 in nine starts against the White Sox with an ERA of 4.70, and at home Shields is 2-1 in five starts with a 3.90 ERA.

After coming up short on Monday night in the series opener, Shields will have his game face on, while Humber has simply been too inconsistent to depend on, which means a win for the Rays to even the series at one game apiece.

Jose Quintana (1-0, 1.54) vs. Alex Cobb (2-0, 2.25)

The finale will see a pair of young pitchers going head-to-head, starting with Quintana, who has made two major-league appearances, both against Cleveland, and his last outing was his first start in the big leagues. The 23-year-old lasted six innings, allowing a pair of runs on four hits with four strikeouts and three walks to earn his first win in a 9-3 romp over the Indians at home, and it was pretty much what you would expect of a young pitcher. Quintana sometimes struggled to find the strike zone, but he battled through them and let his offense take care of the rest. Of course, with this being his third MLB appearance, this is Quintana’s first time against the Rays, and he’ll be looking to cement his spot in the rotation, at least until John Danks returns from a shoulder injury.

Cobb isn’t much older at 24 and he has just 11 major-league starts under his belt, and like Quintana, he had to work hard for a victory in a 7-4 win in Boston, tossing 96 pitches in five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits with four walks and a pair of strikeouts. Also, like Quintana, Cobb is in the rotation because of an injury as Jeff Niemann was hurt in the Toronto series as he was hit in the leg by a comebacker to the mound, and Cobb would like to show he is deserving of a spot in the rotation. But Tampa Bay fans will have to be wary of his ability to find the strike zone like all young pitchers and he has to last a little longer because a starter that can only go five innings puts a lot of pressure on his bullpen. This will be Cobb’s first appearance against the White Sox.

The first few innings will be a feeling-out process as the hitters try to figure out what the youngsters like to do on the mound, and you can expect them to be patient as younger pitchers tend to beat themselves with walks as they nibble around the corners of the plate. This game could come down to fielding and the bullpen, where the Rays have had troubles this season, but they’re also 17-8 at home as of Tuesday and even though the White Sox are 15-9 on the road and are on a roll, lean towards the Rays to take the rubber match in your sports betting book.
