Tips On Padres Giants Betting – San Francisco Tries To Keep Rolling Against San Diego

Posted by Dale “Skip” Lalonde on 7/19/2012 6:05:23 PM

San Francisco keeps moving up the online betting ranks as they continue to squeeze the life out of their opponents in the National League West, and they could be in line for a sweep when San Diego visits AT&T Park beginning on Monday.

What: MLB Betting
When: Monday, July 23rd – Wednesday, July 25th
Where: AT&T Park, San Francisco, CA

Monday, 10:15 PM ET – Clayton Richard (7-10, 3.86) vs. Ryan Vogelsong (7-4, 2.31)

Richard has been an innings eater for the Padres and he leads the National League in that category, but he is also having problems keeping the ball in the park as Richard has allowed 19 homers, which is tied for fourth in the league. He has lost both starts against the Giants in 2012, taking his record to 5-4 in 10 starts with a 3.64 ERA against San Francisco, where he is 4-2 in six starts with a 4.46 ERA. Vogelsong is quietly putting together a solid season and he is third in the league in ERA, but he has awful numbers against the Padres: 0-2 in 10 games (two starts) with an ERA of 9.28. At home, Vogelsong has been excellent with a 4-2 mark in nine starts with a 1.43 ERA.

Richard is good for giving his team a chance to win, but Vogelsong has been impressive this season and he surely knows his record against the Padres. Look for him to pitch with some added purpose on Monday and get the Giants off to a good start for this series.

MLB Betting Pick: San Francisco Giants

Tuesday, 10:15 PM ET – Edinson Volquez (5-7, 3.69) vs. Madison Bumgarner (11-5, 3.15)

Volquez has fantastic stuff, but harnassing it is another story as he leads the National League in walks. If he could cut down on the base-on-balls, it would probably give him a chance to get two more wins, He has only faced the Giants four times in his career, posting a 2-1 record despite a 6.63 ERA, and three of the starts came in San Francisco, where Volquez is 1-1 with a 5.27 ERA. He’ll go up against Bumgarner, who is getting overshadowed by the brilliance of Matt Cain and the struggles of Tim Lincecum, but he has been holding down the fort until the latter gets his command under control. Bumgarner has won both of his starts against the Padres in 2012, taking his record against San Diego to 3-2 in 10 games (nine starts) with a 3.24 ERA.

The Giants have been getting steady production from Bumgarner and they should help him get his 12th win of the season because you can’t trust Volquez’s walk issue to not be a factor. In seven of his last 10 starts before a start against Houston, Volquez had walked four or more batters in an outing and when you put that many players on base, you’re going to eventually get in trouble. The edge goes to San Francisco in this contest.

Wednesday, 3:45 PM ET – Jason Marquis (4-9, 5.59) vs. Tim Lincecum (3-10, 5.93)

Lincecum’s issues have been one of the major storylines of the season and just when you think the two-time Cy Young winner has it back, he’ll get pounded and you don’t know what to do with him. The Padres have brought Lincecum some success in 2012 as he is 1-0 in two starts against them with a 2.57 ERA, taking his lifetime record to 10-4 in 20 starts with a 2.03 ERA. Marquis is a grinder who isn’t going to try and overpower you with his stuff like Lincecum, but he has been relatively solid since coming over from Minnesota. His first start with San Diego came against the Giants and even though he took the loss, Marquis tossed a decent game and he is now 5-5 in 14 games with a 3.07 ERA against San Francisco, where he is 4-3 in eight starts with a 3.56 ERA.

At least at home Lincecum is giving himself a chance with a 3.43 ERA as opposed to a 9.00 ERA on the road, and a visit from San Diego could be what the doctor ordered for him. Prior to a start in Philadelphia, Lincecum’s last four starts were a mixed bag in which he looked like the “Freak” that won two Cy Young awards, but then at other times, he looked like this year’s edition. The Padres aren’t out of it, but because of his past against San Diego, Lincecum gets a tentative edge in our sports betting picks.
