Top Five Spectacular Catches In MLB History

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 6/29/2012 4:42:11 PM

The baseball world is still buzzing over Mike Trout’s impressive catch against the Baltimore Orioles, as the star rookie proved that he is more than just an excellent hitter. Trout got up to rob Orioles’ hitter JJ Hardy of a sure home run with a beautiful leaping grab, inspiring us to take a look at the top-five spectacular catches in MLB betting history.

5. Gary Matthews Jr. Robbing Home Run At The Wall

There is nothing a pitcher appreciates more than when his defense comes up big, and in this case, Gary Matthews Jr. comes through huge, robbing Houston Astros’ hitter Mike Lamb of a home run. The best part of this video might actually be Matthews’ reaction, as he acts as though it is nothing more than a routine sports betting play in the field.

4. Jim Edmonds Diving Grab In NLCS

When Jim Edmonds retires, he will do so as one of the greatest defensive centers to ever play the game. The eight-time Gold Glove award winner is known for his amazing grabs, but none was bigger than game seven of the 2004 NLCS, when Edmonds made this spectacular diving grab in deep center to prevent the Houston Astros from breaking the game wide open. The score was 1-0 Houston at the time, and if this ball dropped, the Astros could have taken a 3-0 lead. However, Edmonds made the catch, and the Cardinals went on to win the game 5-2 and win the NL pennant.

3. Ken Griffey Jr. Off The Wall

While he was known for his incredible hitting skills in the 1990’s, Ken Griffey Jr. was also no stranger to the big catch in center field, where he made a habit of making the highlight reel. None of his grabs were bigger than this one at the Kingdome, where Griffey Jr. launched himself in to the wall to rob Ruben Sierra of a hit, and somehow came up without any broken bones.

2. David Wright Barehanded Grab

There is a reason for baseball players wearing gloves, but David Wright defied that logic with this catch in the seventh inning of an 8-3 loss to the San Diego Padres. The most impressive part of this video is that he made the catch barehanded, but how about the fact that he also traveled 20 feet in to the outfield and managed to track it the whole way through?

1. Willie Mays’ Famous Diving Catch In 1954 World Series

Any MLB betting online fan out there has had to see Willie Mays’ spectacular grab in the 1954 World Series before. Tracking back to the wall on a deep fly ball, Mays makes a beautiful diving catch with the game tied at two in the eighth inning. Known to sports fans simply as “The Catch”, Mays tracked back approximately 420 feet to deep center and made the grab at the warning track, keeping the game tied. The New York Giants would go on to win the sportsbook game, and complete the World Series sweep f the Cleveland Indians.
