Padres, On A Winning Binge, Try To Keep The Train Rolling In San Francisco

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 6/18/2013 7:31:23 PM

It’s hard to believe, but it’s true: Entering play on Tuesday, June 18, the San Diego Padres lead the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants in the N.L. West standings.

Game 1: San Diego Padres @ San Francisco Giants – Wednesday, June 19

The pitching prowess of the light-hitting San Diego Padres is what has catapulted this team – one of the worst in baseball over the past two seasons – to a respectable position in the National League West after two and a half months of competition. The Padres enjoyed a few highly productive years in the middle of the first decade of the 21st century. They made the playoffs multiple times; were beaten by the Colorado Rockies in a one-game playoff in 2007; and were knocked out of the playoffs on the final day of the season by the San Francisco Giants in 2010. However, in four of the past five seasons, the Padres failed to a substantial extent. The franchise failed to win as many as 77 games in 2008, 2009, 2011, or 2012, tumbling to the bottom of the National League West and losing the belief that it could be a consistent force in the big leagues.

However, things could be changing for the Padres. A seven-game winning streak built on strong starting pitching has enabled the Padres to claim a winning record, 36-34, through the first 70 games of the season. The Padres are not in first place in their division, but they have moved half a game ahead of the defending champion Giants.

A sound sports bet will probably be able to make a reasoned case for San Diego here, but the question everyone is asking is this: “Can the Padres sustain their run?” There’s a long way to go in this season, and one would have to think that the Giants, playing at home, deserve more trust from bettors than the Padres do. Take San Francisco and starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner in this Wednesday matinee in the City By The Bay.

MLB Betting Pick: San Francisco

Game 2: Miami Marlins @ Arizona Diamondbacks – Wednesday, June 19

Power is something that earns the respect of mma betting specialists. The Miami Marlins utterly lack power. This impotent offense is the worst in the majors through two and a half months. The Marlins entered June 18 with only 216 runs; no other big-league team had scored fewer than 240 runs. When one realizes that Miami beat Arizona on Monday night in the first game of this three-game series, the odds have to be tilted severely in favor of the Diamondbacks for this Wednesday encounter. Take Arizona here with a great deal of confidence.

MLB Betting Pick: Arizona

Game 3: Kansas City Royals @ Cleveland Indians – Wednesday, June 19

When people in the online sports betting legal realm size up this game, the odds should be fairly even, but they should ultimately lean to the Indians. Kansas City starter Luis Mendoza owns an ERA that’s just above four runs, which is entirely respectable in the American League. However, Cleveland starter Justin Masterson’s ERA is 3.52, roughly half a run lower than Mendoza’s mark. Both the Royals and Tribe have received excellent starting pitching over the past week, but Cleveland’s starter should probably win this battle on Wednesday.

MLB Betting Pick: Cleveland
