Yankees Athletics Betting – Athletics Should Benefit From Yankees’ Weariness

The New York Yankees are a better team than the Oakland Athletics, but on one afternoon in which the given pitching matchup features Oakland’s ace, the A’s have to like their chances.

American League Betting Pick:

New York Yankees @ Oakland Athletics - Monday, May 30 - 4:05 PM ET

There are multiple competing forces at work in this Memorial Day matinee involving franchises from different sides of the tracks in Major League Baseball. The New York Yankees are old money, the long-established power center of the sport and an MLB baseball betting powerhouse. The Pinstripes own the largest payroll in baseball and have been a fixture in the playoffs over the past decade and a half, ever since the wise building of Buck Showalter and the brilliant leadership of Joe Torre restored a franchise that aimlessly drifted through the 1980s and the early 1990s. The Athletics, on the other hand, are the little guys without a lot of money. The West Coast franchise has enjoyed short bursts of excellence from 1972 through 1975 and from 1988 through 1992, followed by another period of more modest prosperity in the first years of the 21st century. However, most of the past 35 years have been pretty barren in central California. Oakland is constantly trying to juggle payroll and not take on bloated salaries. The team's most recent heyday, in which it boasted of one of the best pitching staffs of the past decade, is a seemingly distant memory. The Yankees have a much more established culture of winning, while the A's are looking to restore what they've been unable to sustain.

In this particular contest, the heart of the battle gets down to two tension points. The first one concerns the arm strength of New York starting pitcher C.C. Sabathia. The lefty is eating up innings for manager Joe Girardi, but he might be due for a one-game letdown or even a two-week lull. Sabathia pitched a very rare complete game last Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays, and moreover, he did so without being dominant. Sabathia gave up four runs in that outing, clearly a sign that Girardi wanted him to go the distance in order to preserve the Yankees' bullpen. Will Sabathia be a little arm-weary in Oakland? The A's have a lineup that doesn't own a lot of pop, but if Sabathia is sluggish, any Major League roster will take advantage. That will be one game-within-the-game to look out for.

The other tension point in Yanks-Athletics is this: Will New York's West Coast road swing catch up with the team? The Yankees play a day game in Seattle on Sunday and then have to catch an immediate flight south to the San Francisco Bay for another contest that will begin just after 1 p.m. local time. Travel wears down the professional athlete on some occasions, as sports betting gurus know well. Will this be one such example?

All in all, the feeling here is that the Yankees will get mowed down by Oakland starter Trevor Cahill. The young moundsman for the A's owns a snappy 2.02 earned-run average, and after losing in his most recent start despite a decent outing (six innings pitched, only three earned runs allowed), Cahill should respond with a strong outing against some not-so-sharp Yankee bats. If you want to make an informed sports bet on this game, take the A’s on Monday.
