Previewing 2014 Dunk Contest With Predicted Winners

Posted by Craig Parsons on 2/12/2014 8:43:55 PM

The 2014 NBA Dunk Contest is going to be the first of its kind because of all the new guidelines and rules. Firstly, the players will form an East and West team based on what conference their team plays in. Then, instead of moving forward with the ultimate goal of finding the dunking champion, the teams will face off by sending one player from each squad to go one-on-one with the goal of getting the win for their team. Whichever team wins three battles first is crowned the winner, and then fans and sports bettors alike will vote on which individual player earns the right to be the “Dunker of the Night.”

Previewing The East Squad

The East squad may have the early advantage as they have defending champion Terrence Ross of the Toronto Raptors along with Paul George and John Wall. Ross proved his worth last year with a handful of jaw dropping dunks, but his teammates this year may be his biggest competition on his quest to repeat as champion. George stands three inches taller than Ross at 6-9” and has the athleticism to do whatever he wants both on the ground and in the air. While Wall may be the forgotten teammate on the East squad, he is one of the most athletic players in the NBA and has hops that will surprise everyone watching. For those sports bettors who are unaware, Wall stands 6-4” tall and has compiled quite the highlight reel of game dunks, which includes both 360 and behind the back slams.

Previewing The West Squad

The West squad doesn’t have as big of names as the East, and they even have players who aren’t known for their dunking. Leading the way is second-year player Damian Lillard who’s one of the best scorers in the NBA and is competing in every All-Star event. Lillard is just an inch shorter than Wall, but he’s failed to make an impression as a dunker and may be one of the few who disappoints on Saturday night. Harrison Barnes and Ben McLemore round out the field for the East, and of those two the most likely to make an impression is the rookie McLemore because of how quickly he can rise up. Although his highlight reel doesn’t have many jaw dropping dunks, McLemore has the leg strength to allow for plenty of hang time, which often leads to more complicated dunks.

Outlook

The East squad appears to have the upper hand at the moment because any of the three team members could walk away as the dunk contest champion. The West squad is hurt by the inclusion of Lillard who is more of a sharpshooter than rim rattler, but in the dunk contest it sometimes is more about creativity than difficulty, which could work in-favor of Lillard and the rest of the West team. With the new format we will have a team and individual winner, and as I’ve already stated the East team has the upper hand. As for the individual winner, which is decided by fan voting, it will likely come down to someone off the East squad with the most likely candidate being Paul George.

Team Winner: East
Individual Winner: Paul George
