Basketball Betting Tips - How The Free-Agency Period Has Looked So Far

Posted by Craig Parsons on 7/9/2012 3:32:54 PM

Teams looking to improve their online betting odds ahead of the NBA season have been busy in the free-agent market and while it has worked out for some teams, others came up well short of what they were aiming for. Here is a look at the best and worst of the free-agency period so far.

Brooklyn Nets

The Nets went all-in this summer as they prepare for their move to Brooklyn, as they managed to convince Deron Williams to stay with them for a five-year deal worth $98 million. Williams, who is currently with the United States team preparing to defend their Olympic gold medal, stated that Brooklyn’s trade for fellow All-Star Joe Johnson was a major factor, and the Nets aren’t done yet as they’re trying to pull off a multi-team deal to bring Dwight Howard from Orlando. A trio of Williams, Howard and Johnson would go down quite nicely in Brooklyn.

Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers are still thought to be in the running for Howard as well, although Andrew Bynum’s reluctance to sign an extension with the Magic is throwing a major wrench into things (But Bynum recently stated he wanted to go to Cleveland? Chew on that one, sportsbook betting players.). But they still managed to come out of nowhere to snag Nash for three years at $27 million, and this gives the Lakers their first legitimate point guard since…Gary Payton? We’re not even sure that counts. But a backcourt of Nash and Kobe Bryant has to excite Laker fans.

Chicago Bulls

One of the more underrated moves of the summer could be Chicago’s decision to bring back Kirk Hinrich, who comes back to the Bulls for two years at six million, which is a very good contract for a player of his caliber. The Bulls don’t have a timetable for the return of Derrick Rose, who tore his ACL at the end of their first playoff series against Philadelphia, and they’re probably not going to pick up the option on C.J. Watson, so bringing Hinrich back into the fold is a smart move as he knows the players and the system, he is a very good defensive guard and he can hit open shots. Granted, he isn’t as dynamic as Rose is, but Hinrich also isn’t going to hurt you that much and that is all the Bulls are going for until their MVP comes back.

Dallas Mavericks

No team in the NBA was hit as hard by free agency as the Mavericks were. They missed out on Williams, a hometown boy who decided to stay with the Nets, and then they whiffed on their backup, Nash, who played for Dallas before and is close friends with Dirk Nowitzki. They had an inkling to go for Howard, but that would have been made possibly only by getting Williams, and then the exodus started as Jason Terry left for Boston and Jason Kidd signed with New York. Nowitzki has stated that he is too old for a rebuilding process, which can’t be encouraging for Dallas fans and now the Mavericks, only a year removed from winning the NBA title, could be in panic mode.

Houston Rockets

The Rockets were making moves all over the place, beginning on draft night, but they have made a couple of strange decisions so far in regards to free agency. They offered $25 million over three years to Chicago’s Omer Asik, who is a backup center, and the Bulls aren’t likely to match it because, well, he is a backup center. Offering Jeremy Lin $30 million makes a little more sense as they traded Kyle Lowry to Toronto, so they need a point guard and Lin will pay for that in jersey sales alone, but word is that the Knicks will match that, so now the Rockets are left without a point guard in a league full of them.

Minnesota Timberwolves

The Timberwolves were strangely silent in the sweepstakes of Kidd, for example, as they’re in the same boat as Chicago in terms of waiting for an injured point guard to return; in this case, Ricky Rubio. Instead, they decided to offer $45 million over four years to Nicholas Batum, who is a good player, but not worth over $11 million per season. While the Timberwolves were unlucky to lose Rubio to a knee injury just when they were making a playoff run, they have to do something to get better soon or else they’ll lose power forward Kevin Love, who is also on the Olympic team and the biggest key to their sports betting odds going forward.
