Bet On Clippers Cavaliers – Clips Take Advantage Of Tired Cavs, End Cleveland Jinx

Posted by Craig Parsons on 2/6/2014 10:20:05 PM

Sports betting players know that certain teams just have problems playing in certain buildings, and Cleveland has been a deathtrap for the Los Angeles Clippers, who haven’t won there since March 2002. With the Cavaliers playing one of the top teams in the league on Tuesday night, look for the Clippers to end their Cleveland skid on Wednesday.

What: NBA Betting
When: Wednesday, February 8th, 7:00 PM ET
Where: QuickenLoans Arena, Cleveland, OH
Pick: Los Angeles Clippers

Why Bet On Los Angeles Clippers (15-7 SU, 13-8-1 ATS)

The Clippers last played on Monday night, when they edged Orlando 107-102 in overtime on the road, and they got another virtuoso performance from point guard Chris Paul, who had 29 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and two steals for good measure. Blake Griffin added 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Chauncey Billups also scored 18 for the Clippers, but it came at a cost as he was injured (more on that in a minute). The Clippers outrebounded the Magic 46-37 and had 11 steals, although they struggled to handle Dwight Howard in the paint as Orlando held a 54-26 edge down low and that is a little surprising considering that the Clippers have Griffin and DeAndre Jordan (who fouled out) down there. It was the play of Paul that pushed them to the victory and if you want a personification of Most Valuable Player, Paul may be it: he has completely changed the culture for this franchise.

They may need him even more as Billups (Achilles) looked to be seriously hurt and that would be a massive loss for the Clippers as he brings veteran leadership to the team; Paul says Billups is the best guard that he has ever played with. Eric Bledsoe (knee) has also been out and it’s sapping the depth of the Clippers’ backcourt, putting more pressure on Paul. That means more touches for Mo Williams and Randy Foye, as well as Ryan Gomes, but losing Billups for an extended amount of time definitely dents the Clippers’ NBA betting chances.

Why Bet On Cleveland Cavaliers (9-13 SU, 13-9 ATS)

The Cavaliers still have an incredibly tough game on Tuesday night in Miami against former teammate LeBron James and the Heat, and they’ll be coming off a 91-88 win at home over Dallas in which they dominated the paint with a 54-38 advantage while outrebounding the Mavericks 46-39. Kyrie Irving, the No.1 pick in last year’s draft, led the way with 20 points and seven assists, while Antawn Jamison notched 19 points and nine boards for the Cavaliers, but the star of the show may have been Anderson Varejao. The floppy-haired Brazilian had 17 points and 17 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end which gave the Cavaliers a few extra chances on that end of the floor and they need every chance they can get. Another timely contribution came from Alonzo Gee, who scored 12 points off the bench and even though the Cleveland subs were outscored 35-20, that was always going to happen when the Mavericks can afford to bring Jason Terry and Lamar Odom, two former Sixth Men of the Year winners, off the pine. Gee’s 12 points definitely minimized the damage for the Cavaliers, who have played better than anyone expected them to so far this season.

Ahead of the Miami game, Daniel “Boobie” Gibson (neck), Anthony Parker (back) and rookie Tristan Thompson (ankle) had missed time for the Cavaliers, and all three can strengthen the Cleveland lineup. Thompson could stand to see more action, which he may get anyway after March 15th, which is the date for the NBA trade deadline. The Cavaliers are going to get hammered with offers for Varejao as his rebounding and defense will come in handy for a postseason contender. They should hold out for a very good offer because the Cavaliers have some solid young pieces in place, and a coach in Byron Scott who is a great teacher of the game.

How It Will Play Out

You would think that NBA odds would favor the Clippers on the road, but don’t be surprised to see the Cavaliers as the NBA betting favorites on Wednesday night as they’ve won nine in a row outright against the Cavaliers, and they’ve covered the spread in eight of those games with six games going over the posted total. The Clippers are 4-4-1 ATS on the road this season, while the Cavaliers are 5-4 ATS at home, so there isn’t much between them.

The matchup between Paul and Irving at the point is going to be fun to watch, and Paul is going to teach the rookie a lesson or two about controlling the flow and tempo of a game. The Cavaliers will need a huge game from Varejao as they can exploit the Clippers in the post, but after a tough game against Miami, can he do it two days in a row? Take the Los Angeles Clippers on the road in your Wednesday online betting picks.
