Betting NBA Basketball - Positioning

Posted by Brian Mulligan on 2/10/2014 5:12:36 AM

As any quality athlete will tell you, whether it’s basketball, football or even golf, positioning is key to success because without correct balance, an athlete cannot be at this best and online betting sports players have to be in the position to evaluate weaknesses and scheduling too.

Now with only about 20 some odd games left in the regular season, teams need to make a push right now to get the proper seeding and positioning if they want to have success in the playoffs.

In the East it’s down to about an 11-team situation with the bubble teams being Milwaukee, New York, Cleveland and Detroit on the outside.

In the West you probably have to go 13 deep with the only teams far out of the post season being the Sacramento Kings and the New Orleans Hornets.

If the playoffs were beginning early this week the Eastern match-ups would be Chicago/Milwaukee; Miami/Boston; Orlando/Atlanta; Philadelphia/Indiana.

In the West, it would look like this, Oklahoma City/Houston; San Antonio/Dallas; Los Angeles Lakers/Denver; Memphis/Los Angeles Clippers.

The two most intriguing sportsbook match-ups straight up would appear to be Philadelphia/Indiana and Memphis/Los Angeles Clippers.

Philly has had success because they have excelled at a number of different areas. They are the stingiest team in the league giving up only 87 points a game with Denver the worst of the playoff teams in that department as they give up 101 a game.

One of the reasons Philly holds teams low, is they defend with the opponent only to hit field goals at a league leading .414. And the other thing that Philly does well, besides move the ball and get everybody involved, is that they protect the ball turning it over a league least at 10.7 a game.

Indiana is a 14.5 in that category so a full 4 possessions can be the difference between moving on or packing for the summer.

Out West, it’s Conference Finals or bust for Memphis. They have played without star Zach Randolph for most of the season but Rudy Gay has stepped up big time and Memphis defends.

They are in the top 8 in league in not allowing points, and they lead the league in forcing turnovers to the tune of 17.6 a game.

As a group, Memphis plays the passing lanes as well as any team as evidenced by stealing the ball on a league leading 10 a game. The worst team in the league in steals is the Los Angeles Lakers at 6 a game but they are the best at avoiding blocked shots at 4.1 a contest.

For a team with a reputation for shot blocking and dunking, the Clippers are an anemic tied for 19 in the league in blocks at 4.8 a contest. The thing that may come back to haunt the Clippers as the move into spring ball is their shooting of free throws.

Only Orlando is worst in the league in free throw percentage as the Clips chime in at just .695 a game.

As far as against the spread, Philly covered 23 of their first 42 games this season. Indiana was 18-21 ATS.

Memphis and the Clippers are extremely close in that category.

Games remaining will be the tell tale sign for these 4 teams. In April Philly has to play 10 of their 14 on the road. As far as Indiana, they play 9 on the pavement including their last 5 of the regular season.

The Clippers have to play 9 of their last 11 of the season with room service while Memphis has a similar schedule but also have 3 weak opponents in their last 5 contests.

As the season dwindles, online sports betting websites players need to pay strict attention to the upcoming games and adjust.
