Betting On Mavericks Suns – Suns Heat Mavs In The Desert

Posted by Craig Parsons on 2/10/2014 4:32:47 AM

Online betting sharps should be keeping an eye on Phoenix, who are moving up the standings at the right time and on Thursday, they’ll welcome a reeling Dallas team to the desert. Even though the Suns play on Wednesday night, the energy of their home crowd will carry the Suns to another victory while piling more pressure on the defending NBA champions.

What: NBA Betting
When: Thursday, March 8th, 10:30 PM ET
Where: US Airways Center, Phoenix, AZ
Pick: Phoenix Suns

Why Bet On Dallas Mavericks (22-17 SU, 21-18 ATS)

The Mavericks continue to flounder after a 95-91 loss in Oklahoma City on Monday, falling for the sixth time in their last eight overall, but coach Rick Carlisle wasn’t happy about the foul calls made down the stretch and we can only assume throughout the game as the Thunder were 29-of-33 at the foul line, while the Mavericks were just 10-of-10. Dirk Nowitzki poured in 27 points, while Jason Terry came off the bench to post 18 points, seven assists and five boards for the Mavericks, who were outrebounded 45-36, but the story of the game was the huge gap at the free-throw line and even veteran Jason Kidd was upset about it, saying that the referees don’t respect the Mavericks. They may have a point because that seems like an incredibly large discrepancy and especially as the defending NBA champions and the amount of veterans on this team, you would think that they would get more calls.

Delonte West (wrist) and Brandan Wright (concussion) are still out for a while, and Brendan Haywood (ankle) may not be able to go in Thursday’s home game against New York, so they have to brush off the disappointment of the Oklahoma City loss quickly. If there was a positive to come from that game, it was the play of Ian Mahinmi, who had 13 points and five boards in 28 minutes off the bench, although he did foul out and he’ll be useful as long as Haywood is out.

Why Bet On Phoenix Suns (17-20 SU, 17-20 ATS)

A lot of NBA betting players may be wondering if the Suns are looking into trading Steve Nash before the trade deadline on March 15th, and we would imagine his value is as higher as it’s ever going to be after a 96-88 win at home over Sacramento on Sunday, their fifth in six games. Nash led the way with 19 points and seven assists, while Marcin Gortat added 14 points and 17 boards for the Suns, who outscored the Kings by 13 in the second half. The Phoenix bench also had a 12-point edge on their Sacramento counterparts to power the Suns, who are only 3.5 games out the final playoff spot in the West as they prepare to head to Oklahoma City on Wednesday. Surprisingly, the Suns have made this run with their defense as they’ve held five of their last six opponents under 100 points, and they all turned out to be wins. Their last three wins over Minnesota, the Los Angeles Clippers and Kings are more impressive because they’re all in the top half of the league in terms of points scored, and although the Suns will never be compared to a team like Boston or Miami when it comes to defense, they’re locking it down at the right time and that means the Suns could be trouble.

Phoenix should come into this game with a clean bill of health as they surge towards the postseason, and the odds are very good that Nash will remain in the desert for the rest of the season, at least, before heading out on the market. Word is, the Mavericks would like to re-acquire Nash (who spent six seasons in Dallas) this summer and there is no problem with his game. He is still a top-10 point guard in a league teeming with them, but the Suns won’t let him go easily.

How It Will Play Out

The Suns should be the NBA betting favorites at home in this contest, but the line may not be that large as the Mavericks are 9-1 SU and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 meetings with the Suns, with seven of those games have gone under the posted total. The Suns are 9-10 ATS at home this season, while the Mavericks are 10-8 ATS away from home.

Dallas may have a slight edge because they’re off on Wednesday, while the Suns face a tough game in Oklahoma City, but lean towards the home team to pull out a close one on Thursday night in the TNT nightcap. The Suns look a little younger right now and their confidence is high, while the Mavericks look nothing like the team that won the championship last season. Take Phoenix in your sports betting picks.
