Brooklyn Nets Betting Predictions – Brooklyn Nets Preview

Posted by Craig Parsons on 10/28/2012 6:40:33 PM

The New Jersey Nets are gone. The Brooklyn Nets have been born. Accordingly, a team moving into a one-billion-dollar arena, the Barclays Center, has a new stash of firepower that did not exist last year. Point guard Deron Williams now has a much more substantial collection of talent surrounding him. He has Joe Johnson, an overpriced but still talented shooting guard who should be able to get a lot of high-quality looks at the basket this season. With Williams and Johnson playing off each other in the same backcourt, the Nets are going to become a much more formidable perimeter scoring team.

When people in the online sports betting legal realm look to the wings, they're going to see Gerald Wallace in a Nets uniform. The highly athletic forward who can play post-up defense and soar above the rim as a slasher will add a lot of dynamism to the Nets at both ends of the floor. In the paint, the Nets have Kris Humphries back in the mix as a returning starter, but Wallace's presence at the small forward spot is going to open up more space for Humphries and teammate Brook Lopez to operate. The Nets' starting lineup of Williams at point guard, Johnson at shooting guard, Wallace at small forward, Humphries at power forward, and Lopez at center is a playoff-worthy quintet.

The high-stakes poker games that take place on a nightly basis in the NBA require an appreciable amount of talent. Last year, the Nets couldn't field five appreciably good starters, but this year, they're much closer to that level of talent. Johnson's defense is a liability, and the Humphries-Lopez combination is not quite imposing, but there's so much offense in this lineup that the Nets should be able to outpace the bottom-feeding teams in the Eastern Conference. Brooklyn should be able to feast on inferior opponents, and that's how the Nets will get the 40 to 43 wins needed to make the playoffs as a No. 7 or No. 8 seed. They might even be able to do more than that in 2012-2013, but they'd probably settle for any kind of playoff berth this season in Brooklyn. That's the non-negotiable goal for this club.

People in the football betting world who don't pay all that much attention to NBA basketball have probably not noticed some other instances in which the Nets have tinkered with their roster. Reggie Evans, a bruising power forward who helped the Los Angeles Clippers make the second round of the playoffs last season, is now going to don a Brooklyn jersey. Evans' muscularity near the basket will give the Nets an enforcer, a strong presence that the leaner Lopez won't be able to provide. Lopez gives the Nets length, but Evans will contribute a nasty extra element to Brooklyn's frontcourt.

Williams' life as a point guard will be made easier by the fact that the Nets acquired veteran backup C.J. Watson from the Chicago Bulls while also drafting point guard Tyshawn Taylor from NCAA runner-up Kansas. The Nets have not just assembled more quality in the first seven spots of their rotation; they've accumulated quality depth to the extent that they have 10 particularly skilled performers. This team should make the playoffs; if it doesn't, expect a lot of roster changes for 2013-2014.
