Golden State Warriors Odds - Turmoil, awful defense will doom entertaining Warriors

Posted by Craig Parsons on 2/4/2014 4:11:24 AM

Golden State’s online betting odds have them as a long shot, for obvious reasons: the coach and the star of the team have a better chance of fighting than the team does of making the playoffs, and they have no desire to improve their team defense, which will once again leave them on the outside looking in the West.

Golden State Warriors Odds: +10000 to win NBA Championship

  • Warriors will score buckets of points...if they can share the ball
  • Golden State could be worst defensive team in the NBA...again
  • How long will Stephen Jackson be a Warrior?

Golden State Warriors odds maker breakdown: STARTING FIVE
The biggest question surrounding the Warriors is, how long will Stephen Jackson remain in Golden State? The small forward gave up his captaincy after requesting a trade, and the Warriors are looking for suitors. He’ll be the starter as long as he’s in town, as long as he doesn’t get out of hand. There’s also a rumored backcourt pairing of Monta Ellis and rookie Stephen Curry, two small shoot-first point guards, and that’s a combination destined to fail. Andris Biedrins and Anthony Randolph are the starting big men, they’re young and athletic, and probably the most stable part of the lineup, which doesn’t bode well for Golden State’s NBA odds.

Golden State Warriors odds maker breakdown: BENCH
Corey Maggette will probably be the first player off the bench as he brings a gunner’s mentality to the table, but not much else. C.J. Watson and Kelenna Azubuike will be the first guards off the bench, but one will make the starting five if the proposed Curry/Ellis backcourt flames out, and Anthony Morrow is still in the picture. Ronny Turiaf brings energy off the pine, and Mikki Moore is a solid veteran pickup, especially since Brandan Wright is out for the first half of the season with a shoulder injury. Wright is productive, when he’s healthy, which he hasn’t been for the first two years of his career.

Golden State Warriors odds maker breakdown: OFFENSE
If there is one thing the Warriors will do, it’s score. Golden State was second in the league last year, thanks to Don Nelson’s “put it up from absolutely anywhere” style of play. Jackson led eight players in double figures with 20.7 points, and the Warriors picked up another offensive-minded player in Curry with the seventh pick in the draft. As long as Nelson is around, the Warriors are guaranteed to score points.

Golden State Warriors odds maker breakdown: DEFENSE
Here’s the problem: The Warriors were the league’s worst defensive team by allowing 112.3 points, and it begins with Nelson, who really doesn’t care if his teams play defense or not. That trickles throughout the team. Jackson is the perimeter stopper, while Turiaf and Biedrins are good shotblockers, but that’s about it. The Warriors’ guards are small, and no one outside of Jackson can guard the league’s premier swingmen.

Golden State Warriors odds maker breakdown: COACHING
Don Nelson is the oldest head coach in the NBA, and he seems to be losing control of the team. He and Jackson got into it over Jackson’s trade demands, and Ellis clearly wasn’t happy with the drafting of Curry, as he’s very similar to Ellis. It’s also painfully obvious that Nelson’s offensive style won’t translate to sportsbook success, not with this team. All he has to do is look at the Phoenix Suns. It may be time for a change in Golden State.

Golden State Warriors odds maker breakdown: SEASON OUTLOOK
The Warriors missed the playoffs for the 14th time in 15 seasons, and even when they made it in 2006-07, it was one of those “the stars are aligned” years. It doesn’t even matter if Jackson stays or goes, because the Warriors’ team defense is just too poor, and the locker room is a mess. There are too many personal agendas, and Nelson has seemingly lost control of the situation. They’ll be fun to watch, but don’t even think of betting on the Warriors this year.
