Hornets Hawks Betting Tips – Struggling Hornets Travel To Atlanta

Posted by Craig Parsons on 2/6/2013 6:30:05 PM

After a rough patch in the last week and a half that has kept the New Orleans Hornets at the bottom of the Western Conference, New Orleans travels to Atlanta trying to steal one from the Hawks.

Why New Orleans Will Win

The high-stakes poker games that take place on a nightly basis in the NBA require a dealer, and Greivis Vazquez is that man for New Orleans. The Hornets are a young, athletic team that can get out and run up and down the court. Greivis Vasquez has seen a spike in his performance this year as one of the top distributors in the game. He gets his teammates a ton of quality looks, which is important in light of the fact that there are few players on New Orleans who can consistently create their own shot. Eric Gordon has come back from his knee injury to get about 30 minutes a night, and while he’s been questionable for games in recent weeks, all signs are that he’s a go in this game. Gordon has proven to be a tough matchup for any defender in the league with his range and explosiveness. Having him out there is a big key for New Orleans.

The Hornets need to get looks from three-point range in this game. The Hawks have one of the worst three-point defenses in the league while New Orleans ranks seventh at 37.1 percent from three-point range as a team. Defensively, New Orleans needs to keep Josh Smith and Al Horford off the boards and should play Smith for the jump shot. Often times Smith plays less than intelligent basketball when teams give him open jumpers.

Why Atlanta Will Win

People in the football betting world who don't pay all that much attention to NBA basketball have probably not noticed how vulnerable New Orleans is on defense. The Hawks must be patient and make multiple passes on offense. The Hawks rank 10th in the league in assists, and New Orleans possesses the third worst field goal percentage defense in the league. Simply put, the Hornets give up a ton of easy baskets to the opposition and have very few defenders on the team that scare opponents.

Al Horford and Josh Smith should be able to physically go at the rookie Anthony Davis when he’s on the floor, as well as Ryan Anderson. New Orleans likes to keep Robin Lopez in for defense, but one of the other two (Davis or Anderson) is constantly on the floor. While New Orleans’ points per game allowed ranks favorably because of the pace the Hornets play at, their defensive rating (points allowed per 100 possessions) is one of the worst in basketball. Simply put, the Hornets don’t get many stops at the defensive end.

New Orleans is 8-24 against playoff teams and 7-9 against all others, showing that while it is rather mediocre regardless of the opponent, the Hornets are terrible against quality opponents. Atlanta won the first meeting in New Orleans, 95-86.

Who Will Win

While the Hawks are one of the least trustworthy playoff teams year in and year out, New Orleans is a team building for the future and has its star player (Gordon) coming off a knee injury that has hampered him a bit. At home and trying to avoid falling in the East standings, the Hawks should roll.
