How To Bet On Spurs Thunder - Spurs And Thunder Cross Texas Border

Posted by Craig Parsons on 5/30/2012 3:53:23 PM

Basketball experts will have to pivot a little bit and adjust their overall outlook. Why? The encounter between Oklahoma City and San Antonio will move north and take on a different feel.

West Finals, Game 3: San Antonio Spurs @ Oklahoma City Thunder – Thursday, May 31
Sports betting line: No line

Why San Antonio Will Win

The Spurs have old legs attached to their trio of top-flight players (and likely Hall of Fame selections) Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili. However, as plenty of basketball analysts have pointed out over the past few months, the Spurs are not the same type of ballclub they once were when they won championships at the defensive end of the floor and ground down opponents with a style that, while anything but sexy, was supremely effective. The Spurs are different now. They have adjusted to the age of their stars and have injected mental freshness into their approach, thanks to the planned and very intentional adjustments engineered by head coach Gregg Popovich.

The Spurs have become more of an offense-first team that moves the ball beautifully and boasts several highly competent three-point shooters. San Antonio is in very good position to outmaneuver Oklahoma City's highly suspect defense and outscore the Thunder in this series. The veterans of the Spurs don't scare easily on the road; Oklahoma City will find it hard to out-maneuver San Antonio even on its home floor.

Why Oklahoma City Will Win

When you do your homework and try to plan your next bet on sports in the NBA postseason, you will be confronted with multiple choices. You can go with the "young, hungry wolves" approach and go with the team that is full of buoyant energy, or you can go with the "veteran team" approach that values wisdom over raw physical prowess. If you are inclined to the former school of thought and not the latter, Oklahoma City is the team for you. The Thunder have owned a solid core for a few years, but last season, they made the astute changes that put them in position to truly contend for the NBA title. This is Oklahoma City's best team. The Thunder were really week near the rim and in the low post through the 2010 season, but when they brought aboard former Boston Celtic big man Kendrick Perkins in 2011, they acquired the piece they had been missing in previous years. Perkins' knees are not fully healthy, but the big guy can still fill space in the middle whereas previous Oklahoma City centers could not match up with the likes of Tim Duncan. Now, the Thunder can play a little more competitively near the basket, allowing their perimeter players to be less burdened on a general level. Oklahoma City is still a superstar team, with Kevin Durant being the hero-ball ace and Russell Westbrook his trusty sidekick, but now the Thunder have enough component parts to make a legitimate charge at the flag. Oklahoma City gains so much momentum and confidence from its home crowd. Yes, San Antonio won't get rattled by Thunder fans, but the key insight to make here is that Oklahoma City will feel extremely comfortable in its own building.

Who Will Win

The Spurs will have their moments in this series, but as the scene shifts north of the Texas-Oklahoma border and moves to the Thunder's home court, it will be hard to pick against the home team. Oklahoma City is an urban community thirsting for a championship, and the energy of the crowd will enable the Thunder to play at their best in the open floor, running past the Spurs. Take Oklahoma City in Game 3 of this five-star matchup.
