NBA Basketball Betting Online - Against The Number

Posted by Craig Parsons on 2/6/2014 9:53:16 PM

As the tip off to the 2011-2012 National Basketball Association nears, and even though teams are now different it’s time to revisit the best and worst teams last year against the spread (ATS) because it can be a culture of certain teams to excel when the sports betting odds are against them.

Online sports betting enthusiasts must resist the temptation to take these stats as gospel as the point spread will be built-into the betting line as far as which teams excel at home and away but historical results are a good thing to know and a good thing to gauge for future wagers.

With the shortened season, every game obviously becomes imperative and staying healthy will be more important this season than others but the young teams in the league could very well have an edge as the season moves along becomes of the condensed schedule.

Older teams, like the defending champion Dallas Mavericks, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics are not getting any younger and if a key player gets hurt, the entire season could go the other way in a hurry.

At the beginning of the season, online players could do worse than to concentrate on good offense teams that remained intact from last year with little roster change. The teams that have new coaches and a ton of new players WILL struggle to be consistent.

With that said, let’s examine the ATS online sportsbook records.

Starting in the Atlantic Division, the New York Knicks and the Philadelphia Seventy Sixers were tied for the best ATS record with 46 wins.

The Knicks were the best in the division away from Madison Square Garden ATS with a 26-14-1 slate and they could be even better this year with Carmelo Anthony settling in and Amare Stoudemire with a healthy back.

In the Central, the Chicago Bulls were awesome with a 50-31-1 slate ATS. They were equally as successful home or away and as an ATS dog, they were a solid 13-4.

Cleveland, as one might expect, was the worst in the division and outright horrible with a 17-23-1 record ATS at home. Despite all the upheaval for the Detroit Pistons, they were solid with a 44-38 ATS slate.

The Southeast Division was disappointing as a whole ATS as not one team produced a winning record. It kind of figured for the Miami Heat as they were over bet most of the time but Charlotte was the best at .500 for the season and the Washington Wizards anemic with a 32-50 record against the number.

Three teams in the Northwest Division, Oklahoma City, Denver and Portland all had winning sportsbooks records ATS with Portland having the best ATS record at home and Denver the best ATS dog with a 21-12-1 record.

Like the Southeast, the Pacific Division produced no team with a winning ATS record. The Los Angeles Lakers were the best of the lot ATS away and also a clear leader vs. Division foes.

The ageless San Antonio Spurs finished second in the Southwest Division ATS with a plus 10 record but Memphis was absolutely sensational with a 52-29-1 finish. Those teams along with the Dallas Mavericks all had winning records ATS in away games. Despite finishing last straight up vs. Division foes, the Houston Rockets had a winner record ATS and were solid away with a 24-16-1 finish.

If one tries to pay attention to how teams respond ATS early in the year, it could lead to success down the line.
