NBA Betting Odds – Trends For The Weekend’s Hoop Action

Posted by Craig Parsons on 2/5/2014 2:07:46 AM

Online betting players will have a busy weekend on the hardwood, and here are some tips and trends for the top five matchups to be played over Saturday and Sunday, highlighted between a clash of two of the best in the West.

Hawks Heat Betting – Saturday, 7:30 PM ET

The Heat will likely be double-digit favorites at home on Saturday, and they’re 4-1 both SU and ATS in their last five meetings with the Hawks at home. They’re also coming off their best performance of the season in a 118-90 rout of Cleveland in LeBron James’ return to the city he spent seven seasons, and lived close to for his whole life. James had 38 points, eight assists and five rebounds, with no turnovers, and the Heat showed what they could do when Dwyane Wade defers to James. Wade still had 22 points, nine assists and nine boards, but this night was all about James, and it ended up being Miami’s best game of the season. This will be the second half of a back-to-back for the Hawks, who play at home against Philadelphia on Friday, and leading scorer Joe Johnson is out for at least a month after elbow surgery. It could get ugly. Take Miami with the points, no matter how large the spread is.

Rockets Bulls Betting – Saturday, 8:00 PM ET

Both teams will be in the second half of back-to-backs as Houston will be in Memphis on Friday, while Chicago visits Boston, but the Bulls will be favored at home by NBA betting odds. Chicago is only 2-3 SU and ATS in their last five games at the United Center against the Rockets, who are 4-6 ATS on the road this year. The Bulls are only 3-3-1 ATS at home, and they’re still working on getting Carlos Boozer into the lineup. Boozer had five points and two boards in 22 minutes in a 107-78 loss in Orlando on Wednesday, and when he gets back into game shape, the Bulls will push for a top-four spot in the East. We would bet on the Bulls SU on Saturday, but we’re wary on the spread as we’re not sure how fresh the Bulls will be after a tough game in Boston.

Hornets Spurs Betting – Sunday, 7:00 PM ET

In the marquee matchup of the weekend, the Spurs will be NBA betting favorites at home on Sunday. The Spurs are 4-1 SU and 3-2 ATS in their last five games at home against the Hornets, who are 4-4-1 ATS away from home, while San Antonio are 5-4 ATS at home. These two have split a pair of meetings this year, with the road team winning each time, and both should be pretty rested after having Saturday off. The shine has fallen off the Hornets’ fast start and now they have to work hard to prove it wasn’t a fluke, but in San Antonio, the Spurs have been excellent SU, so go with the home team.

Warriors Thunder Betting – Sunday, 7:00 PM ET

The Thunder should be favored at home by NBA betting odds in this game, but we’ll wait on the spread until we know how Kevin Durant’s knee is. The NBA scoring leader missed Oklahoma City’s triple-overtime win over New Jersey on Wednesday, and he’s questionable for their trip to Toronto on Friday. But that’s fine: Russell Westbrook had averaged 28.4 points, 9.6 assists, 7.0 boards and 3.0 steals in five games prior to Friday night, and is officially in the conversation of the league’s best point guards. The Warriors had lost seven of eight heading into this game after losing at home to Phoenix on Thursday, and when they held an opponent under 100 points over this stretch, they won. The Warriors are 1-3 SU and 2-2 ATS in four trips to Oklahoma City and they’re a decent 5-5 ATS away from home this year, while the Thunder is 4-6 ATS at home. This should be an exciting game as neither defense is playing that well, but we trust the Thunder to come up with a key stop far more than we trust Golden State.

Clippers Trailblazers Betting – Sunday, 9:00 PM ET

The Clippers will be NBA betting underdogs in this game, and even though they’re 1-4 SU in their last five in Portland, they’re 3-2 ATS, so check the spread. But the Clippers have been more relevant than even because of Blake Griffin, the explosive forward who is the early favorite for Rookie of the Year. Griffin is showing everyone what they missed last year when he was out with a knee injury, and we haven’t seen someone attack the rim like this since Shawn Kemp. He has even made the Clippers more competitive, and they’re 5-3 ATS away from home this season. Portland is 4-3 ATS at home, and they had lost five in a row heading into Friday’s visit to Washington, and they look ripe for an upset while the Clippers aren’t nearly as bad as their record indicates. Take Los Angeles on the road for the sports betting upset.
