NBA Draft Betting – Kyrie Irving Should Be The Story Of The Draft

Posted by Craig Parsons on 2/6/2014 9:48:31 PM

Online betting players are recovering from one of the wildest NBA seasons in recent memory, and even though there is a threat of a lockout, basketball fans should still look ahead to the future. The draft comes up on Thursday, and the first overall pick will be a player who was injured for most of his lone college season, but it was enough to make him the favorite for the No.1 selection.

  • What: NBA Betting
  • When: Thursday, June 23rd, 7:00 PM ET
  • Where: Prudential Center, Newark, New Jersey
  • Pick: Kyrie Irving

The Favorites

Duke’s Kyrie Irving needed only 11 games in his freshman season to prove to teams that he should be the No.1 pick, and he’ll be the overwhelming favorite for the top selection in the draft, which is held by Cleveland. The point-guard position could be as loaded as it has been at any given time in the NBA’s history, and the Cavaliers have Baron Davis, who is on the downside of his career and isn’t the easiest to motivate in the first place. If the Cavaliers, for some reason, decide to pass on Irving, the next logical selection would be Arizona’s Derrick Williams, a lanky forward with a sweet outside shot, but he could be destined to be a “tweener”: too big for small forward, too small for power forward. If he can find his niche, Williams could be a very effective scorer in the NBA, but for now, it looks like the No.1 pick is Irving’s to lose.

If neither of these two are taken by the Cavaliers with the first overall pick, Kentucky point guard Brandon Knight could sneak into the picture, although it would be a major upset if Irving wasn’t the pick. Knight is the next in a long line of point guards that have been educated by Kentucky coach John Calipari, who has helped Chicago’s Derrick Rose, Sacramento’s Tyreke Evans and Washington’s John Wall become top-five picks, while Rose and Wall were No.1 picks, and Rose and Evans won the Rookie of the Year award.

The Second Tier

After the top three picks, NBA betting players may have their hands full making selections for the first 10 choices, and they should take on an admittedly international flavor. Enes Kanter (Turkey), Jonas Valanciunas (Lithuania) and Jan Vesely (Czech Republic) will all be taken within the top 10, with Kanter and Valanciunas looking to prove that all European big men aren’t soft, and Vesely is another big body who can shoot from deep. Connecticut guard Kemba Walker played himself into a lottery pick by leading the Huskies through the Big East and NCAA Tournaments, even though some are worried by his lack of size and inexperience playing the point-guard position. San Diego State’s Kawhi Leonard has elbowed his way into the lottery as well as his Aztecs may have been the surprise of the college season, and Leonard is a superb athlete who many feel will be able to help a team on the boards. Texas’ Tristan Thompson is similar to Leonard when it comes to athleticism and rebounding prowess, but he is still very raw.

The x-factor for NBA betting players when it comes to this part of the draft is forward Bismack Biyombo, who comes from the Congo, but has emerged after a few pre-draft workouts. Biyombo may be the most athletic player in the draft, although he has a long way to go in terms of fundamentals, but he could be worth a lower lottery pick for a team that is still a few years away from contending (possibly Golden State at No.11).

The Longshots

Most NBA betting players are aware of BYU guard Jimmer Fredette, who led the nation in scoring and became known as a player who can shoot from anywhere. Fredette will have to learn to play the point in the NBA because he is a bit small to play shooting guard, but he can definitely pay dividends on a team looking to stretch the floor. Colorado guard Alec Burks is a very skilled two-guard, but he still has to put on some weight on his 6’6” frame so he can avoid getting bullied. The twin duo of Kansas forwards Marcus and Markieff Morris can help a team on the glass, and right now, it appears as though Marcus is projecting to be a lottery pick, although Markieff won’t be far behind.

The ability to score is something that will always earn you a spot in the league, and that is why Texas’ Jordan Hamilton may be able to sneak into the lottery as well. The swingman has good size, can score inside and out, and is extremely confident in his abilities. He has some temperamental issues at Texas, so that could be a worry, but Hamilton is worth a shot.

How It Will Play Out

This is all about Kyrie Irving, who many feel is similar to New Orleans All-Star Chris Paul with his feel for the game, and Irving isn’t a play who depends on flashy play and athleticism to overcome his fundamental problems. He is as solid as they come, usually making the right decision, and he has good size for his position.

But most importantly, Irving is a player who has charisma, which is something that Cleveland needs as they try and rebuild from the LeBron James debacle, and he is a player that the fans can get behind. The Cavaliers also have the fourth pick, so they have a chance to really get their team back on track with a great draft. That all starts with Kyrie Irving, so bet on the point guard to be the No.1 NBA pick in your sports betting picks.
