Nets Grizzlies Betting Tips – Gay, Grizzlies Try To Slow Down Streaking Nets Friday

Posted by Craig Parsons on 1/23/2013 6:07:54 PM

For months there had been sports betting rumors about the Memphis Grizzlies potentially trading Rudy Gay to an able suitor in order to shed salary and get out of the luxury tax. It isn’t common to hear about an NBA team looking to part ways with its leading scorer in the midst of a playoff race, but the Grizzlies couldn’t afford the financial hit and were apparently low on options. As it turns out, Memphis was able to strike a minor deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers to send Marreese Speights, Wayne Ellington, Josh Selby, and a future pick in exchange for Jon Leuer, a move that shed $6 million in salary. That means the Grizzlies will still have Gay in the lineup when they host the Brooklyn Nets on Friday night, and as they continue to try and lock up home court advantage for the opening playoff round.

At no point did the Nets consider shedding salary in their debut season in Brooklyn, as this team remains focused on making the playoffs and proving they can compete with the best in the Eastern Conference. The Nets are less than three games back of the Miami Heat for first place, and still have an outside shot at closing the gap down the stretch.

NBA Betting Preview: Brooklyn Nets

While they have given the home fans something to cheer about so far this season, Brooklyn has struggled on the road with a .500 record that has prevented them from taking that next step. The talent is certainly shown as the Nets have won nine of their last 10 games overall, and the online betting difference will be giving maximum effort in tough environments to play. Even with all of the offensive firepower Brooklyn ranks fifth in the NBA in points allowed, and it is through that strong play at their own end that they are able to generate points in transition, something that has been key to their turnaround under head coach PJ Carlesimo.

NBA Betting Preview: Memphis Grizzlies

The Grizzlies have been even better on defense with the average 89.4 points they have allowed per game the second-best number in the NBA, with Mike Conley and Marc Gasol doing an excellent job leading the team in steals and blocks respectively. Memphis has played excellent team defense and not allowed a lot of unconstested shot, and that has helped make up for a lack of offense for a group that ranks 28th in the NBA in scoring. Gay has averaged a team-high 17.5 points per game and is an asset the team couldn’t afford to lose, so fans should be thrilled that management was able to go another route to get below the luxury threshold.

NBA Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

Basketball fans in Tennessee will be happy their team didn’t have to give up its leading scorer, but they still have a tough test against a Nets’ team that has been on fire of late and playing inspired ball. Brooklyn has thrived under coach Carlesimo, and will continue to show how much they like to play for him as they play with a sense of urgency down the stretch.
