Wolves, Pistons Fight For Pride

There are sports betting games each year that beg the question of why there are 82 games in an NBA season instead of 60? This is one of those games, as two NBA draft lottery teams meet.

Minnesota Timberwolves @ Detroit Pistons – Tuesday, March 26

Betting line: No line

Why Minnesota Will Win

When the best online betting sites size up this game, they won't have to come up with overly complex reasons for a triumph by the Timberwolves. Those reasons, however, lie with Detroit's inadequacies more than any of Minnesota's basketball virtues. When you take these two teams, finding areas where they are strong on a league-wide basis is like finding a needle in a haystack. That said, if you're inclined to pick Minnesota, one of Detroit's biggest flaws is its record against the Western Conference.

While the Pistons aren’t exactly beating up on the East, they are only 4-22 against the West. Minnesota, on the other hand, has been fairly decent (by its standards) against the East with a 10-14 record. Detroit has struggled with turnovers all season, and for a team like the Timberwolves, one that does not have an efficient offense by any means, those transition baskets off steals could be a big key.

Derrick Williams and the Timberwolves' frontcourt should have a favorable matchup going against a shorthanded Pistons front line and must take advantage of it. Otherwise, the offense may become stagnant.

Why Detroit Will Win

In this hardwood version of poker, Minnesota has the better dealer in the person of Ricky Rubio, but he is not playing with a winning hand. If you wanted to know the impact of Kevin Love on the Timberwolves, look no further than the offensive numbers of the team this season. Minnesota is simply dreadful offensively, ranking last in the league in three-point shooting and third to last in overall field goal percentage.

The team has no direction on offense, and even though it gets to the free throw line quite frequently, it is one of the worst at knocking down foul shots. Detroit is one of the better rebounding teams in the NBA, and while Andre Drummond’s injury does hurt the team's size down low, one man doesn’t account for Detroit’s overall rebounding rank. The Pistons should be able to pound Minnesota on the glass (especially without Kevin Love) and generate a number of second-chance points.

The Pistons should be able to get easy baskets if the team moves the ball. Minnesota doesn’t do much at the defensive end of the floor. Only six teams in the NBA have a worse field goal percentage defense, and Minnesota does nothing on the offensive glass to retain possession and give itself multiple chances. If Detroit can use some of its young athleticism out in the open floor, it should score at will.

Who Will Win

These teams offer no reason for confidence or trust in picking them. You’re looking at two of the more consistently bad teams in the NBA with a lot of weaknesses and not many pluses. The Pistons seem like the right play given the fact that they have been much better at home than on the road. Despite their woes against the Western Conference, Minnesota doesn’t put much fear into picking against them. Take Detroit.
