Predictions For NBA Betting – Who Are The Worst Head Coaches In The NBA?

Posted by Craig Parsons on 11/26/2012 5:28:05 PM

When people in the online sports betting legal realm discuss the worst head coaches in the National Basketball Association, they would likely arrive at three names before any others. Yes, these betting experts would be doing something that occurs in various high-stakes poker games or other card games: Thoughtful pondering of a calculated decision. However, when arriving at that choice, the NBA provides more clarity than poker. Whereas choosing a card is a complete abandonment to the whims of chance, assessing the worst NBA coaches is an activity based on an examination of facts that any fan can access.

Any casual fan, not just sports bettors or people interested in football betting in particular, needs to realize that one of the three worst coaches in the NBA is Vinny Del Negro of the Los Angeles Clippers. Del Negro is the unique coach in this triumvirate because he is and has been the coach of winning teams. Del Negro coached the Chicago Bulls in the NBA playoffs a few seasons ago and was part of that epic first-round playoff series between the Bulls and the Boston Celtics, the seven-game epic that introduced a man named Derrick Rose to the American sporting populace in full. Last year, Del Negro's Clippers reached the second round of the NBA playoffs before getting swept by the San Antonio Spurs.

You might think that Del Negro is a better coach than many of his colleagues in the NBA, but one has to realize that the former San Antonio Spur player has inherited talented teams and has not gotten the most out of them. So many other teams have worse records than the Clippers this year, but they have far fewer resources to work with. Del Negro owns an abundance of highly skilled players, and yet has not been able to bring the Clips particularly close to an NBA – or even a conference – championship. He had a lot of material to work with in Chicago, and the Bulls never made a push under his leadership. It took Tom Thibodeau to bring the Bulls to the Eastern Conference finals two seasons ago. Thibodeau – unlike Del Negro – knows how to get the most out of a roster.

Del Negro's main faults are that he: A) doesn't handle late-game substitutions very well – this was apparent in the Clippers' loss to the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 6 of the first round of the NBA playoffs last season. B) Del Negro's game and timeout management in the final minutes have not been impressive, to say the least. During many games in the 2011-2012 season, Clipper players looked on in bafflement after a wrongly-taken timeout by their coach.

The two other coaches are fairly easy to identify: Mark Jackson of the Golden State Warriors went 23-43 in his first season on the job. Jackson does not seem to have a good handle on how to make the Warriors into a sharper and more resilient club, especially at the defensive end of the floor. This season needs to be a big one if Jackson is to change minds around the league.

The final coach in this trio is Randy Wittman. It's true that Wittman has handled bad teams at earlier stages in his career (the Cleveland Cavaliers before LeBron James arrived, and the Minnesota Timberwolves before Kevin Garnett arrived), but the Washington Wizards' boss is leading his team nowhere quickly. Wittman has never won more than 32 games in any one NBA season. That's just not something a good NBA coach should have to admit on his resume.
