Raptors Nets Betting Prediction – Toronto Ends Six-Game Homestand, Goes To Brooklyn

Posted by Craig Parsons on 1/13/2013 6:17:34 PM

The Toronto Raptors have spent most of the past two weeks playing at home, but now they'll have to rediscover the road as they go to Brooklyn to take on the Nets, who are playing better.

Why Toronto Will Win

Few college football betting experts thought that the Louisville Cardinals would beat the Florida Gators in the 2013 Sugar Bowl, but Louisville did indeed smack around Florida in a 10-point game that wasn't really even all that close. Toronto could similarly sneak up and surprise a lot of people in this game against Brooklyn.

Don't look now, but the Raptors are playing legitimately good basketball. They have used the past two weeks to acquire a different level of cohesion at the offensive end of the floor. They are playing a more blended game with a level of confidence that has been missing for much of the season. Toronto, it has to be said, performed very poorly in the month of December, shooting the ball without any confidence in several ugly losses, especially at Portland.

A number of NBA writers said that the Raptors, in that loss at Portland, helped to set back the sport of basketball several years, or something to a similar effect. It was hard to think at that point in time that the Raptors were capable of winning four games in a six-game stretch, but here they are. They might be a tougher opponent for Brooklyn than a lot of experts think. If they sustain their level of performance from the first two weeks of January, they're definitely going to be a tough matchup for the Nets.

Why Brooklyn Will Win

The best betting reason to take the Nets in this game is that they have, by all appearances, shrugged off both the losing streak and the sense of inadequacy that haunted them in the final days of the tenure of former coach Avery Johnson. The Nets have found stability under new boss P.J. Carlesimo, a seasoned basketball man and hardly the kind of novice head coach who cannot handle an interim tenure with great poise or wisdom.

Some interim coaches – think of Portland at the end of last season after Nate McMillan got fired; Kaleb Canales, a 34-year-old pup, was simply not ready to coach the team on an interim basis – just can't withstand the pressure or deal with the complexity of being a head coach. Carlesimo is not that kind of person. He's been in the pro game for almost 20 years after 12 years at Seton Hall in the college game. Carlesimo has made relevant adjustments and learned at the feet of a master, Gregg Popovich, as an assistant for the San Antonio Spurs. The Nets have been a completely different team under Carlesimo since Johnson was fired shortly after Christmas Day. There's little reason to think they won't play well against Toronto.

Who Will Win

Ultimately, the fact that Brooklyn – the team with more talent – is playing well at the moment should recommend the Nets as the proper pick in this game, despite Toronto's recent surge.
