Game 1 Was The Feeling-Out Process; In Game 2, The NBA Finals Begin To Develop

Posted by Craig Parsons on 6/6/2013 7:02:51 PM

The NBA Finals match two teams whose starting fives did not face each other in two regular season encounters. There’s a lot of mystery to a series that’s just getting started.

2013 NBA Finals, Game 2:
San Antonio Spurs @ Miami Heat – Sunday, June 9

If you have played high-stakes poker games for a living, you can probably relate to what the NBA Finals must feel like for the two participating organizations. In the online sports betting legal domain, you should be able to identify this as one of the most enthralling NBA Finals matchups in quite some time. The best player in the world, LeBron James of Miami, will go up against the best active coach in the NBA, Gregg Popovich of San Antonio. The defending champion Heat will face a core group of players – Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili – that has won three world championships (Duncan won a fourth one in 1999 before Parker and Ginobili arrived in San Antonio) and wants to add to its legacy.

Even the ranks of football betting students who simply can’t be bothered to do much of any analysis on the NBA would say that this series might get their attention. Which team will prevail in Game 2?

Think about Game 2 of this series if Miami gets the 1-0 lead on Thursday, June 6. If Miami loses Game 1, the Heat become an obvious choice in Game 2. However, a Miami win in Game 1 sets up a situation in which the Spurs will face that much more of an urgent task in Game 2. San Antonio would need to leave South Florida with at least one win in its pocket, so that it doesn’t have to win four out of the next five (potential) games in the series, and more specifically, so that it doesn’t have to sweep the middle three games of this series on its home floor in the Alamo City. Game 2, if indeed Miami leads 1-0, would be a near-must for the Spurs.

San Antonio, having gone a week and a half without playing an actual game, would enter Game 2 with its rust gone, and that’s why the Spurs’ level of flow would probably matter even more in this contest than the adjustments made by coach Gregg Popovich. Yet, Popovich is most definitely a primary reason to place confidence in the Spurs and their ability to bounce back, in the event that they do lose Game 1 of this series.

Professional basketball gurus will remind you that whereas the Indiana Pacers fell short against Miami in the Eastern Conference Finals because of shaky play in the backcourt, San Antonio has the best point guard in this series, Tony Parker. San Antonio’s ball movement is going to be so much better and more fluid than anything Miami’s defense saw against Indiana. The Heat might score a little more because San Antonio is not as long or as powerful in the paint, but Miami is going to have a very tough time preventing San Antonio from putting the ball in the bucket.

The Spurs might not beat the Heat in the series, but they are going to make Miami work very hard to defend its 2012 championship. One should be ready to expect a 1-1 series when the action shifts to the city of San Antonio on Tuesday evening for Game 3. Take the Spurs here if Miami wins Game 1.
