Thunder In Tough To Bounce Back At Home Versus Dominant Spurs In Game 3

Posted by Craig Parso on 5/22/2014 8:20:45 PM

The Oklahoma City Thunder had no answer for the San Antonio Spurs through the first two games of their NBA Western Conference final series. Returning home to Oklahoma City for game three might not be enough to turn things around. The Spurs have pounded the Thunder in to submission in each of the first two games, including a 35-point win in game two on Wednesday night. Oklahoma City head coach Scott Brooks has failed to make significant adjustments to this point, and he doesn’t have many options heading in to game three on Sunday night.

Western Conference Finals
San Antonio Spurs @ Oklahoma City Thunder
Sunday, 8:30 PM ET – Game 3
Spurs lead series 2-0

San Antonio has won each of the first two games in the series by double digits, getting the job done at both ends of the floor in order to take all of the excitement out of this series. Not only have the Spurs been able to score a ton of points, they also held the Thunder to just 77 points in game two, which is a playoff franchise-low. Tony Parker had a game-high 22 points and five assists, with Danny Green providing another 21 points, including shooting 7-for-10 from behind the three-point line. San Antonio’s depth has also been key with Manu Ginobili, Boris Diaw, and Marco Belinelli contributing off the bench, while Tim Duncan has averaged a double-double in points and rebounds through the first two games.

Size has been the biggest problem for the Thunder, which is why the outlook is so dim heading back home for game three. The loss of Serge Ibaka has left open a major hole at both ends of the floor, allowing San Antonio to attack the paint on offense, while defending their paint without many problems. The MVP Kevin Durant struggled from the floor in game two and finished with just 15 points on 15 shots, while Russell Westbrook took an alarming 24 shots and scored 15 as well. While something should be said about the coaching staff for a severe lack of creativity at the offensive end of the floor, the idea that Durant and Westbrook may never reach their full potential playing on the same team has certainly become a storyline again in this series.

With no Ibaka, Oklahoma City doesn’t have that star big man that they can roll out against Duncan and company, and that has left them exposed. Durant and Westbrook always have the potential to go off on any night, but the fact that they have been so bad throughout the first two games, and that there will be no lineup changes going in to Sunday suggest this Thunder team is in big trouble. Finishing this series as quickly as possible and avoiding injuries while earning a chance to rest up for the NBA Finals is the goal for San Antonio, so look for the Spurs to come out firing again in game three, and take a commanding 3- 0 series lead.
