Spurs Thunder Betting Tips – Parker Steps Up To Lead Spurs To Victory

Posted by Craig Parsons on 6/5/2012 3:28:39 PM

Online betting sharps that love the NBA have to be sad that the Western Conference finals between Oklahoma City and San Antonio is almost over; this has been arguably the best series of the last two or three years, and the Thunder are on the edge of a trip to the NBA Finals. But the Spurs still have some fight left, and their point guard will lead the way to a Game 7 in San Antonio.

What: NBA Betting
When: Wednesday, June 6th, 9:00 PM ET
Where: Chesapeake Energy Arena, Oklahoma City, OK
Pick: San Antonio Spurs

Why Bet On San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs had 21 turnovers in Game 5 of a 108-103 loss at home against the Thunder, and that isn’t like them, not the team that we’ve seen for most of the season. Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker had five turnovers apiece, but Ginobili put 34 points, seven assists and six rebounds and made a number of huge shots in the third quarter. Meanwhile, Parker had 20 points on 5-of-14 shooting and even though he hit 10 of his 12 free-throw attempts, he wasn’t as assertive as he was early in the series; in fact, Parker has to assume a large portion of the blame for the last three losses because when Parker is on his game, the Spurs are almost unstoppable. Even though the Spurs will need their role players to step up in Game 6, Parker has to take the team over like he did in the first two games of the Western Conference finals.

San Antonio will also need their role players to step up outside of Stephen Jackson, who had 13 points off the bench as the Spurs started Ginobili. Kawhi Leonard had 10 boards and did his best to get in the faces of Kevin Durant and James Harden, but he shouldn’t be counted on for points. Gary Neal missed all six of his attempts from the field and that can’t happen if the Spurs are going to extend this season. Tim Duncan had 18 points and 12 rebounds, but he can’t be expected to put up a 30-15 to save the Spurs; Parker has to lead the way and everyone has to get in line.

Why Bet On Oklahoma City Thunder

Durant led the way with 27 points with five assists, four rebounds and three steals, while Harden added 20 points and hit a number of big shots, including a clutch three-pointer that basically put the game out of reach and sent the Spurs into foul mode. But Russell Westbrook chipped in with 23 points, 12 assists and four steals and the point guard is one of the league’s most infuriating players; at his best, Westbrook is an athletic marvel on both ends of the floor, but at his worst, Westbrook takes ill-advised shots and over-dribbles sometimes. We saw both versions of Westbrook in Game 5, but his ability to get the better of Parker over these last three games has been the difference in this series.

The Thunder have looked mature and composed, even when they were down by two games against a San Antonio team that had won 20 in a row and especially in San Antonio in Game 5, they were unflappable. But they have to know that the Spurs are going to bring everything they have in Game 6 and they have to prove early that they are ready for it. Everyone knows that the Thunder are wildly talented, but they cracked a little in the first two games of the series. They’ll need that maturity and composure in spades on Wednesday night because the Spurs aren’t going to go home without a fight.

How It Will Play Out

NBA betting odds have the Thunder favored by five points at home, where they swung the momentum back in their direction with wins in Games 3 and 4, and the atmosphere at Chesapeake Energy Arena may be the best in the league. It is almost college-like the way that everyone stands for a huge portion of the game, and they’re always loud, even when their team is down. That is extremely helpful for a team that is so young.

But the Spurs will use every ounce of experience they have to get back into this series and the motor to their engine will be Parker, who dominated the first two games of his matchup with Westbrook, but he has taken a step back and he has made some awful mistakes over the last three games. Ginobili can’t be expected to score another 34 points and Duncan shouldn’t be either, so the onus is on Parker to win his matchup with Westbrook, and he will be the difference in a Game 6 win to go back to San Antonio. Take the Spurs on the road in your sports betting picks on Wednesday.
