Warriors Look To Go Up 2-0 After Surviving Cavaliers Best In Game 1 Of NBA Finals

Posted by on 6/5/2015 10:09:23 PM

Based on the way they played the first 48 minutes of Game 1 of the NBA Finals there was really no doubt the 8 days off between games benefited the Cleveland Cavaliers. The problem for them was what happened after that. LeBron James scored 44 points, Kyrie Irving scored 23 points with seven rebounds, six assists, four steals and two blocks and it looked as though Cleveland could steal the series opener and home advantage for the series away from the Golden State Warriors. Then Irving went down, the Cavaliers missed two potential game-winning shots in the dying seconds of regulation and the Warriors dominated the overtime period to take a 108-100 win and 1-0 series lead. Now Cleveland will head in to Game 2 with more question marks than answers while Golden State looks to seize control of the series with another win.

What It Will Take For Cavaliers To Win

Even more important for the Cavaliers than the Game 1 loss as the way in which it happened as their fortunes seemed to turn on a dime late in the game. The most damaging will be the extent of the injury Irving suffered as he left the game in pain and was seen leaving the arena in crutches. Irving was an absolute force at both ends of the floor for Cleveland and it’s hard to imagine anybody being able to replace what he brings. With no Irving and no Kevin Love there will be even more pressure on LeBron and while his 44 points in Game 1 was impressive he will need to be much more efficient for the Cavaliers to have a chance. LeBron was just 18-38 from the field in the series opener and he is on pace to post one of the worst playoff 3-point percentages in NBA history. The Game 1 loss was Cleveland’s first in these playoffs when LeBron scores 30 points or more and the supporting cast will really need to step up for them to have a shot in Game 2. There will be a ton of pressure on JR Smith, Tristan Thompson and maybe even some of the veteran players like Shawn Marion and James Jones to step up it will be interesting to see how they react even though it would take an unbelievable effort for the Cavaliers to bounce back and win Game 2.

What It Will Take For Warriors To Win

Every single time the NBA MVP has won Game 1 of an NBA Finals at home his team has gone on to win it all and other than the fact that LeBron plays for the other team it doesn’t seem likely that trend will end this season. Curry was brilliant as he scored 26 points with eight assists, four rebounds and two 3-point shots and while his career-high streak of eight consecutive games with at least three 3-point shots came to an end he didn’t have to score that many for Golden State to win. Klay Thompson chipped in with 21 points while the Warriors bench outscored Cleveland’s 34-9. It’s also important to remember how rusty Golden State looked early on and how they worked hard to turn things around following a slow start. If they can avoid another rough first quarter this Game 2 could get ugly in a hurry.

Outlook & Pick

The Cavaliers threw their absolute best at the Warriors in Game 1 and still lost so with Irving injured and Golden State bringing more confidence and momentum in to Game 2 at home it’s hard to envision a scenario where Cleveland wins. It’s much more likely that the Warriors capitalize on Irving’s injury and put their foot on the gas with Curry, Thompson, Draymond Green and a dominant supporting cast cruising to a Game 2 win at home.

Pick: Golden State
