Young Guns of Kentucky To Square Off With Bo Ryan’s Wisconsin Badgers

Posted by Washington Tucker on 4/3/2014 10:15:33 PM

The Kentucky Wildcats have had quite the rollercoaster ride of a season so far. They’ve competed with some of the best teams in the country, such as the Florida Gators, but they’ve had their fair share of bad losses as well. Their opponent in the Final Four, the Wisconsin Badgers, are from the Big 10 conference and have played plenty of Top 25 teams this season. The Badgers aren’t as flashy as the Wildcats, but they have a few scorers and should make this a game to remember.

Odds: Kentucky -2

What To Watch For From The Wisconsin Badgers

The Badgers can put points on the board -- they average 74 per game this season -- but they can play the defensive-minded low scoring game as well and proved this when they were victorious against the Arizona Wildcats just last weekend. The Badgers are led by sophomore Sam Dekker at the wing and junior Frank Kamisnky in the post, but guard Traevon Jackson is the teams real x-factor. Kaminsky and Dekker routinely lead the Badgers in scoring, and as the tournament has progressed Kaminsky has played an increasingly bigger role that included a 28 point 11 rebound performance against Arizona. Wisconsin doesn’t have the same athleticism as the Wildcats, but they have a dominant big man to match up with Julius Randle, and if they can contain the Harrison twins this is a game that could go either way.

What To Watch For From The Kentucky Wildcats

Although they had the best freshmen class at the beginning of the season, the Wildcats were wildly overlooked when the tournament began. They were under seeded by the selection committee, but they are finally getting the recognition they deserve as they’ve made it to the Final Four for the second time in three years. Last year’s squad of freshmen had a hard time playing together as a team, but this year’s squad has come together as of late and has beaten the one, two, and four seeds in the Midwest Region. Many could argue that Michigan, Louisville, and Wichita State are all better than the Badgers, and for that reason the Wildcats are the two-point favorite heading into this game.

Outlook

The Wildcats have scored over 70 points three games in a row now, and although the Badgers like to score the ball as well I see this game being lower scoring than many predict. Teams get more conservative as the tournament progresses, and in the Final Four you can bet both of these squads will be playing some hard-nosed defense. The down low matchup of Randle and Kaminsky will be one to watch, but overall the Wildcats simply have too many weapons for the Badgers to stop which is why Kentucky is my pick to win this game and advance to the National Championship.

Pick: Kentucky
