Betting On Kansas Missouri - The Big 12 Game Of The Year Is Set

Posted by Washington Tucker on 2/6/2014 10:13:16 PM

The Kansas Jayhawks and the Missouri Tigers will discontinue their famed “Border War” series in the American Heartland when Missouri leaves next season for the SEC. Time to fight.

Kansas Jayhawks @ Missouri Tigers - Saturday, February 4

Sports betting line: No line

Why Kansas Will Win

When you do your homework and assess your sports bet on this game, it’s worth mentioning that Kansas – for all its problems and weaknesses this season – answered the bell most decisively when its manhood was most profoundly questioned. Kansas, on Jan. 16, hosted then-unbeaten Baylor with the Bears looking to take complete control of the Big 12 race. Kansas – a team that lost in nearby Kansas City (it plays its home games in Lawrence, Kansas) to Davidson College in December – had struggled through the non-conference portion of its campaign, groping for solutions and trying to mesh on the court. Coach Bill Self was tinkering with his lineup, trying to find the right combinations while also in search of the motivational magic that could unlock the full measure of his team’s talents. Well, Kansas found the ingredients and the mixture it was looking for against Baylor.

The Jayhawks flew up and down the court, stifling Baylor at the defensive end and creating transition opportunities in a 92-74 romp that restored a discernible swagger to the Jayhawks’ every step. This is now a team that believes a lot more in itself; one should not view this past Saturday’s loss at Iowa State as cause to doubt the Jayhawks going forward. A road game at Iowa State is going to be a tough ask for most Big 12 teams this season, given that Iowa State is a bubble team and not the bottom-feeder it was in previous seasons. Kansas has the chops to go into Columbia, Missouri, and knock off the hated Tigers before Mizzou goes to the SEC for the fall 2012 football and basketball seasons. KU wants this game in the worst way, and the Jayhawks just might get it.

Why Missouri Will Win

The college basketball betting experts who follow the Big 12 Conference for a living know that Missouri has been extremely impressive this season, rendering a coaching change unimportant at least to this point on the calendar. When coach Mike Anderson took the open job at Arkansas, Missouri flailed and floundered for a few weeks before finally hiring Miami Hurricane coach Frank Haith. The move was met with a lot of skepticism, given that Haith had not done much at Miami and since Mizzou had reportedly wooed Purdue coach Matt Painter when it conducted its coaching search. However, Haith has proved his doubters wrong… at least so far. Missouri is a hungry team whose guards, particularly Marcus Denmon, make stacks of plays at both ends of the floor. Missouri, playing at home, should be able to force a lot of Kansas turnovers, and when Missouri creates turnovers, it scores big.

Who Will Win

Missouri’s ability to force turnovers will victimize Kansas’ backcourt. The Tigers, playing at home against a loathed rival, will storm past the Jayhawks and win their last home-court edition of the Border War.
