Betting On Marquette Syracuse – Orangemen Clip Golden Eagles With Defense

Posted by Washington Tucker on 2/6/2014 9:58:11 PM

Online betting players should turn their attention to the Big East this weekend as the No.1 team in the country, Syracuse, will host a Marquette team that has been slumping as of late. The Golden Eagles are going to have their hands full against the patented Syracuse zone and its length as they contest every shot, and that’ll be the difference as the Orangemen remain undefeated.

What: NCAA Basketball Betting
When: Saturday, January 7th, 4:00 PM ET
Where: Carrier Dome, Syracuse, NY
Pick: Syracuse Orangemen

Why Bet On Marquette Golden Eagles (12-3 SU, 4-7-1 ATS, 1-1 Big East)

The No.20 Golden Eagles lost a 14-point halftime lead in a 73-70 loss at Georgetown on Wednesday, and their defense definitely suffered because the Hoyas shot 62.8% from the field, although they did force 17 turnovers on the night. Darius Johnson-Odom dropped 18 points, while Jae Crowder had a solid all-around game with 17 points, eight boards and five steals for the Golden Eagles, who shot 44.2% from the field, but watched a lead that was as big as 18 points slip away in the final 13:10 of the game and a loss to the Orangemen could knock them out of the rankings. Marquette has now lost three of their last five, including two on the road at LSU and Georgetown, and the Golden Eagles are in danger of falling down the college basketball betting ladder after coming into the season as a darkhorse in the Big East. This trip to Syracuse isn’t going to make it easier.

Marquette is still missing center Chris Otule (knee), and that has hurt them on the glass as the Golden Eagles are 103rd in rebounds per game and 162nd in rebounding margin. This is going to be crucial against a Syracuse team that looks to keep you outside with their zone and then snatch the rebound, but the Orangemen can be exposed on the glass. The Golden Eagles also have to hit their shots against the 2-3 zone and even though that is easier said than done, head coach Buzz Williams knows that Marquette has to take advantage of their opportunities, especially on the road.

Why Bet On Syracuse Orangemen (16-0 SU, 10-5 ATS, 3-0 Big East)

The top-ranked Orangemen won their second in a row on the road in an 87-73 victory at Providence, and they did it with a big second half, outscoring the Friars by 12 points. Brandon Triche led six Orangemen in double figures with 16 points as they shot 61.1% from the floor, including 10 of their 17 three-point attempts, while Scoop Jardine steered the offense with 10 points and 11 assists for Syracuse. They also got another solid game out of Fab Melo, who had 11 points and two blocks, although he did have just three boards for the Orangemen, but if he is effective, that makes Syracuse one of the favorites for the title because having a big man in the middle of their extremely long zone makes it even tougher to penetrate and grab rebounds. Melo was a bust in his freshman year and the Orangemen expect much more out of him this season.

Syracuse may need more out of Melo as fellow center Rakeem Christmas (hip) may not be able to return to the lineup, which hurts their depth and interior presence. The Orangemen have a distinct size advantage over the Golden Eagles and would have even if Otule was suiting up for Marquette, but Syracuse has to take advantage of it. Christmas has been up and down to start his freshman year and his injury doesn’t help. Overall, the Orangemen have great numbers, but their No.4 ranking in scoring margin is boosted by their schedule; Syracuse has played one good team so far, and that was a four-point win over then-No.9 Florida at home on December 2nd. It would have been nice to see the Orangemen tested in their non-conference slate before they head into the brutal Big East and it’ll be interesting to see if this comes back to bite head coach Jim Boeheim.

How It Will Play Out

NCAA basketball betting odds will definitely favor the Orangemen at home, where they have won 14 straight games, although they are only 7-5 ATS at the Carrier Dome this season. Syracuse is 2-1 SU and 1-2 ATS in three meetings at home with Marquette, with two of the games going over the posted total, and the Golden Eagles are 2-1 ATS on the road.

Marquette is used to playing with smaller lineups, so the size disadvantage won’t be a major problem. It’ll be all about their ability to hit shots against Syracuse, who are 20th in the country in field-goal defense, and that is going to be an issue. The Golden Eagles also look to force turnovers (22nd in steals) and turn up the pace at both ends, but Syracuse has an experienced point guard in Jardine who has plenty of experience against Marquette’s style and won’t be flustered. Take Syracuse in your sports betting picks.
