Betting On Michigan Indiana – Hoosiers Outlast Wolverines In Bloomington

Posted by Washington Tucker on 2/6/2014 9:56:47 PM

Sports betting players are witnessing the rebirth of two programs that used to be among the elite on the national stage, and on Thursday Indiana will welcome Michigan to town with a lot on the line for an early-season Big Ten contest. In what should be a highly competitive game, look for Indiana’s size and shooting efficiency to be the difference in Bloomington.

What: NCAA Basketball Betting
When: Thursday, January 5th, 9:00 PM ET
Where: Assembly Hall, Bloomington, IN
Pick: Indiana Hoosiers

Why Bet On Michigan (12-2 SU, 6-5 ATS)

The No.16 Wolverines are now 2-0 in the Big Ten after a 61-56 win over Minnesota at home, and they got a massive game from freshman Trey Burke, who poured in 27 points and was the only Wolverine to reach double figures. That made up for a poor game from fellow guard Tim Hardaway Jr., who shot 2-of-14 from the field en route to seven points. Michigan won this game because of a 14-6 edge on the offensive glass (and 34-26 overall in rebounding), and they were also 15-of-23 from the free-throw line, while Minnesota was just 6-of-8. It wasn’t a pretty game, but the Wolverines showed a lot of mental toughness to hold off a pesky Minnesota team and that is a good sign for a program that has been getting better and better under John Beilein.

Overall, the team is led by the guard duo of Hardaway Jr. and Burke, along with Zack Novak and the Wolverines are an efficient team that hits 48.1% of their shots, and they shoot 36.6% from three-point land. They also shoot a lot of three-pointers, but the Minnesota game showed that they can still compete if their long-range shots aren’t falling, and they were only 6-of-20 against the Golden Gophers. They also take very good care of the ball and that is something that is criminally underrated in today’s college games as most teams try to rely on their athleticism. The Wolverines aren’t terribly athletic, so they have to be stout when it comes to fundamentals.

Why Bet On Indiana (13-1 SU, 8-1 ATS)

NCAA basketball betting players have to start following the Hoosiers now after their 74-70 win over Ohio State, their second win over a team ranked in the top two (Indiana beat then top-ranked Kentucky on December 10th), and they did it with a balanced attack. All five starters scored at least 10 points, led by 17 from Jordan Hulls, with Victor Oladipo adding 16 points for the Hoosiers, who forced 17 turnovers out of the Buckeyes. These turnovers helped the Hoosiers overcome a shooting-percentage edge for the Buckeyes, and Ohio State had eight more rebounds than Indiana, but this team believes under Tom Crean, who has this program on the upswing perhaps a season or two ahead of schedule. The Hoosiers also showed a lot of heart by bouncing back from a disappointing loss at Michigan State, and now the rest of the skeptics are coming around to the Hoosiers, who are seventh in the nation in field-goal percentage, ninth in points scored and second in three-point percentage.

It’ll be interesting to see if the Hoosiers can come out on top in the rebounding battle against the Wolverines as both are 106th in the country in terms of rebounding margin. Both teams are also great three-point shooting teams, although the Wolverines shoot far more. Look for Indiana to try and control the flow of the game with their forward duo of Cody Zeller and Christian Watford, and many experts are hyping Zeller to be better than his older brother Tyler, who is a star at North Carolina. The Hoosiers will need him to hit the boards hard and earn some second chances for the Indiana offense, which is very efficient.

How It Will Play Out

Indiana should be the college basketball betting favorites at home, where they are 6-0 ATS this season, while Michigan is 2-2 ATS on the road. The Hoosiers are 4-1 SU and ATS in their last five at home against the Wolverines, with four games going over the posted total, and this game figures to be a close one as both programs are out to show they can challenge Ohio State, Wisconsin and Michigan State in the Big Ten.

This is going to come down to the wire, but the Hoosiers have more size in the post and at home, they’re an excellent team spurred by a fanbase that is eager for the team to get back to past glories. The Hoosiers will also win the turnover battle and that is huge in the college game, so we’re taking Indiana to pull away and cover a small online betting spread in this contest.
