Betting On North Carolina Virginia Tech: North Carolina And Virginia Tech Have Different Needs

Posted by Washington Tucker on 2/6/2014 10:06:10 PM

The North Carolina Tar Heels and the Virginia Tech Hokies are both smarting and steaming at this point in the college basketball season, but for entirely different reasons.

North Carolina Tar Heels @ Virginia Tech Hokies - Thursday, January 19

Sports betting line: No line

Why North Carolina Will Win

When you do your homework and assess your sports bet on this game, you have to realize that Virginia Tech is simply not very good. A number of transfers and injuries over the past year and a half have rendered coach Seth Greenberg’s team impotent and rather short-handed. Virginia Tech isn’t just one of those teams that’s having an occasional bad game over the course of a long season. The Hokies have already lost to both Wake Forest and Boston College, two of the worst teams in an ACC that’s already down compared to past years.

The ACC might get only three teams into this year’s NCAA Tournament, meaning that there are more vulnerable, beatable teams in the conference than in quite some time. Therefore, the fact that Virginia Tech is sinking and not rising (or even maintaining its same 2011 level) in the 2012 season is an ominous sign for the Hokies. A North Carolina team that lost last Saturday to Florida State should be ready and able to win this game decisively. After the Tar Heels stunk up the joint against Florida State, en route to a 90-57 loss, coach Roy Williams’ club should be very angry, full of vinegar and sourness as it seeks to get back on track.

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The college basketball betting experts who are looking at this game are unquestionably going to take North Carolina. However, college basketball is a sport of upsets, and that’s what makes this - and every other non-cupcake game - appreciably intriguing. If North Carolina could completely fall apart at Florida State, it could do the same against Virginia Tech. Last weekend in Tallahassee, Florida, UNC simply didn’t show up in a 33-point loss. Carolina couldn’t hit the side of a barn from three-point range; star shooter Harrison Barnes hit just five shots all game long, and no one in Carolina blue uniforms had what could be called a hot hand. North Carolina point guard Kendall Marshall did not see the floor, and he coughed up one bad turnover after another, usually by throwing a lazy pass out of bounds. North Carolina played with little energy and even less of a sense of purpose. The Tar Heels have world-class talent, but they were drilled by a Florida State team that played with tremendous desperation from start to finish. Virginia Tech is definitely a desperate team after losing to Florida State and Boston College last week. The Hokies are looking for a signature win to jump-start their season. If Virginia Tech maxes out and North Carolina doesn’t wake up, of course this game can go in the Hokies’ direction.

Who Will Win

It’s hard to imagine North Carolina losing to Virginia Tech after disappearing against Florida State. The Tar Heels had one bad day at the office; it’s extremely unlikely they’ll have two clunkers in a row.
