Big Ten Tournament Betting – Buckeyes Go Back-To-Back at Big Ten Tournament

  • What: College basketball betting
  • When: Begins Thursday, March 10th at 2:30 PM ET
  • Where: Conseco Fieldhouse, Indianapolis, IN
  • Pick: Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State’s sports betting odds to win the national title won’t drop a lot if they don’t win the Big Ten tournament, but after a mini-slump the Buckeyes have stepped up their game to show that they’re the best team in the conference, and they’ll show why in Indianapolis.

College Basketball Betting: Ohio State (-125)

The Buckeyes ended the regular season as the No.1 team in the country, and while freshman sensation Jared Sullinger deserves a lot of credit, he wouldn’t have the success that he does without an experienced group of shooters around him led by Jon Diebler, who holds the Big Ten record for career three-pointers, and the underrated David Lighty, who made some big shots as a freshman for the 2007 team that went to the national title. Teams should beware if they double down on Sullinger: the Buckeyes are third in the nation in three-point percentage. The x-factor is freshman point guard Aaron Craft, who has been great this season, but the postseason is different.

College Basketball Betting: Purdue (+300)

The Boilermakers take the second seed, even with a loss at Iowa in their finale, and before then Purdue had won seven in a row. They have a one-two punch in JuJuan Johnson and E’Twaun Moore, a pair of seniors who gives the Boilermakers scoring inside and out. Purdue is also a good defensive team with Johnson at the back as one of the nation’s best shotblockers. The problem is, if Johnson or Moore can’t score, there isn’t much outside of those two besides Lewis Jackson, who hurt his hand in the Iowa game. If Johnson or Moore struggle offensively, the Boilermakers could make a quick exit.

College Basketball Betting: Wisconsin (+350)

The Badgers were thrashed in Columbus in their finale to claim the third seed in the Big Ten tournament, when Ohio State was a mind-blogging 14-of-15 from three-point range. That is the major chink in Wisconsin’s armor: they struggle to defend against the long-range shot, which is strange when you consider how good they are inside the line. Teams are making 37.9% of their three-pointers against the Badgers, which is something they’ll have to fix quickly. Also, like the Boilermakers, Wisconsin has an inside-out duo in Jordan Taylor and Jon Leuer, but not much else outside of Keaton Nankivil, although he has five straight games of 10 points or more.

College Basketball Betting: Michigan (+800)

The Wolverines are back after a terrible start to the Big Ten season, losing six of their first seven. Michigan then tore through the rest of the slate, losing only at Ohio State, by two at Illinois (who they will face in the first round of the tournament) and a single point at home against Wisconsin. The Wolverines are the youngest team in the Big Ten and don’t have any seniors, so inexperience could play a role, but it also could be a good thing because Michigan doesn’t know any better and can just go out and play. Darius Morris does a little bit of everything, while Tim Hardaway Jr. leads a crew of players who will jack up a three-pointer from anywhere within 30 feet, and the Wolverines make 8.0 three-pointers a game. They also play defense better than you think. Don’t sleep on the young Wolverines.

College Basketball Betting: Michigan State (+800)

The Spartans have been the biggest disappointments in the nation, going from a national contender to a team that may have to win the Big Ten tournament just to get to the Big Dance. It’s been a tough season in East Lansing, as the Spartans played a murderous non-conference slate against Syracuse, Connecticut, Duke, Washington and Texas, and only one of those games were at home. The Spartans also had to deal with an injured Kalin Lucas, and Korie Lucious was suspended for violating team rules. Michigan State just isn’t as tough as they have been in recent years due to a number of things, and it doesn’t bode well for their chances that they haven’t made it to the Big Ten final since winning it all in 2000. Now, they have to win as a No.7 seed.

College Basketball Betting: the Rest

Fifth-seeded Illinois leads the rest of the field at +1000, but they’ve been wildly inconsistent all season and you can’t get a good read on the Fighting Illini. The same goes for Penn State at +2000, while Minnesota isn’t even worth a shot at +3000 after losing nine of their last 10. Demetri McCamey has to put the Illini on his back if they’re going to win the tournament for the first time since 2005, while the Nittany Lions will lean on Talor Battle, one of the top scorers in the Big Ten.

College Basketball Betting: Outlook And Pick

Ohio State has the field covered and they flexed their muscles by tearing through Wisconsin, something that the Badgers would love to avenge on a neutral court in Indianapolis. We want to take Michigan over Purdue, but the Boilermakers are more experienced and their campus is just north of Indianapolis, so they will be well supported. We’re going with Ohio State and Purdue in the final, and even though the Buckeyes lost in West Lafayette, we think they’ll be better on a neutral court and they have too many weapons for the Boilermakers to stop them all. Go with Ohio State, the favorites in your online betting book.
