Kentucky Looks To Extend Undefeated Run; Duke Aims To Avoid Letdown This Saturday

Posted by on 2/20/2015 9:15:59 PM

No. 4 Duke survived a crazy overtime finish to escape with a win over its biggest rivals in No. 15 North Carolina on Wednesday and Kyle Wiltjer went off for 45 points to lead No. 3 Gonzaga to another dominant victory on Thursday but at this point it’s clear that all anybody really cares about is No. 1 Kentucky and their path to an undefeated season. That road to a perfect season will continue on Saturday against another beatable SEC team as one of the most highly anticipated college basketball games of the weekend.

Auburn Tigers vs. #1 Kentucky Wildcats

Saturday, 7:00 PM ET

The road to immortality stands at five more stops with three of them at home including the lone ranked opponent left on Kentucky’s schedule in No. 18 Arkansas. However, the closer the Wildcats get to a perfect regular season the more the question becomes about how much it matters. Kentucky clearly hasn’t had to deal with the same type of schedule as teams from the ACC and if they improve to 31-0 and then suffer an early exit from the national title tournament then what will it all mean? Right now the only thing on the mind of coach John Calipari is getting the victory this weekend and they should have no problem taking care of business against an Auburn team that has lost nine of 13 games in a relatively weak SEC. Eventually the Wildcats will need to be more consistent with their shooting numbers perhaps the most pressing issue so far but until they get to March it shouldn’t really matter all that much.

Pick: Kentucky

Clemson Tigers vs. #4 Duke Blue Devils

Saturday, 4:00 PM ET

Duke survived an absolute thriller with UNC to bolster its stock among the best teams in the country and it will be interesting to see how it all plays out with the rematch versus the Tar Heels the only remaining game they will play against a ranked opponent. Jahlil Okafor has looked dominant at times this season and the Blue Devils need him to be that type of aggressive leader that can take over games for them. A dominant win over Clemson might not mean much on the surface but Duke seems to be getting better with every victory and they should have no problem taking care of a Tigers team that just suffered a double-digit loss at the hands of Georgia Tech earlier in the week. The Blue Devils might be their own worst enemy heading in to this contest and will need to find a way to avoid an emotional letdown following such a massive win.

Pick: Duke

Florida State Seminoles vs. #2 Virginia Cavaliers

Sunday, 6:30 PM ET

Speaking of the ACC and the teams with a shot at making some noise come March the jury is still out on a Virginia team that continues to win games with the emphasis on playing the best defense possible. The Cavaliers are ranked second in the nation thanks to a defense that on average has allowed just 50.5 points per game this season and they have to be itching for a rematch with the only team that has beat them so far in Duke. Next up for Virginia this weekend is a date with a Florida State team that lost by just three points against Duke a couple of weeks ago so the Cavaliers certainly can’t afford a letdown.

Pick: Virginia
