2015 College Basketball Betting – Badgers Hope To Upend Kentucky

Posted by Washington Tucker on 4/1/2015 10:02:46 PM

In a college basketball season that really seemed to muddle along in the fall and the winter, the arrival of spring has given fans a special game to look forward to. Wisconsin versus Kentucky should be the kind of game the Final Four needs.

Final Four:

Wisconsin Badgers vs. Kentucky Wildcats (Game In Indianapolis) – Saturday, April 4

The Wisconsin Badgers, at first glance, look like the kind of team that can beat Kentucky. The Badgers are a really good shooting team. They’re one of the top offensive teams in the country, and that doesn’t happen because of only one or even two players. Wisconsin has Frank Kaminsky and Sam Dekker, two players who scored 29 and 27 points, respectively, last Saturday in the West Regional final against Arizona. They can both shoot from the perimeter. They can take defenders off the dribble. They can play with their backs to the basket in post-up situations. They are rangy and can find all sorts of angles for their shots. These are the biggest reasons why Wisconsin scores almost 1.2 points per possession, which is the number one scoring rate in the country. However, Wisconsin has other role players who enable this team to function as effectively as it does. Bronson Koenig has been an upgrade at the point guard spot over Traevon Jackson in terms of offense. His defense is more of a question mark, but Koenig’s offense – due to his three-point shooting – gives Wisconsin more of a chance to score than Jackson does. Jackson’s injury has, in a real sense, made the Badgers’ offense better this season. Josh Gasser is valuable mostly on defense, but he is also a very solid three-point shooter who can spread the court even more. The diversity of players, all of whom can shoot (this also includes Nigel Hayes), will give Wisconsin the chance to beat Kentucky.

However, while the Badgers can score, Kentucky can defend. The Wildcats have what is the nation’s most powerful defense, the exact way to shut down Wisconsin and turn this game in a direction Kentucky will like.

In Willie Cauley-Stein, Kentucky has a defender whose long arms and great court coverage enable him to stay with offensive players. Cauley-Stein can handle Kaminsky in a one-on-one matchup. He can make it hard for Kaminsky to score, and that’s something Kaminsky has not had to deal with very often this season. He has not faced many players who are as tall as him, and who have an even longer reach. It would not be too surprising if Cauley-Stein contains Kaminsky and prevents him from scoring 20 points in this game. If that happens, Kentucky will probably win comfortably. If Kaminsky doesn’t score 20, Dekker will need to have a huge game, and one of Wisconsin’s role players will need to score a lot as well.

With Karl-Anthony Towns and Trey Lyles, Kentucky has other tall defenders who can deal with Wisconsin’s frontcourt. The Wildcats have so much size at each and every position, and this also includes the backcourt, with Andrew and Aaron Harrison both being able to defend Wisconsin guards that are smaller.

It is Kentucky’s size which is likely to win this game for the Wildcats, especially since Wisconsin isn’t quick enough to beat Kentucky with dribble penetration.
