Georgetown Syracuse Betting – Syracuse “D” Comes Up Big Against Hoyas

Posted by Washington Tucker on 2/6/2014 1:20:38 AM

Sports betting players will be stepping into Rivalry Week in the NCAA, and two of the fiercest rivals in the country will clash on Wednesday at the Carrier Dome, when Syracuse hosts Georgetown in a Big East clash with both teams just outside the top 10. When Syracuse plays well, it’s usually because of their patented zone defense, and they’ll look for that to be their main weapon against the streaking Hoyas.

  • What: NCAA Basketball Betting
  • When: Wednesday, February 9th, 7:00 PM ET
  • Where: Carrier Dome, Syracuse, NY
  • Pick: Syracuse Orangemen

Why Bet On Georgetown

After being counted out of the Big East, the No.11 Hoyas (18-5, 7-4) have roared back to win six in a row, and it’s all about their offense. In their last 11 games, all four of the Hoyas’ losses have come when they failed to break 60 points. Senior guard Austin Freeman has averaged 22.2 points over this six-game streak, and he’s been efficient as he does it, which is a running theme for the Hoyas. Georgetown is second in the country in field-goal percentage, using that Princeton offense run by coach John Thompson III to get good shots. Senior guard Chris Wright and junior Jason Clark are also playing well, which takes the pressure off Freeman, and it also helps that senior forward Julian Vaughn has stepped up to give the Hoyas an inside game.

If you want to dig into the Hoyas’ NCAA basketball betting odds, one way to do that would be slowing down Georgetown from downtown. The Hoyas shoot 38.4% from long range, and they’re going to have their hands full going against the Syracuse 2-3 zone that holds the opposition to 30.4% from three-point land.

Why Bet On Syracuse

The No.12 Orangemen (20-4, 7-4) rolled over South Florida by 23 points for their second straight win after losing four consecutive games, a streak that could have left them for dead in the Big East. Syracuse’s problem as of late is that they’re not playing for 40 minutes, often going through long stretches of unproductive play, and in three of those four losses, their opponents have shot 50% or higher. The forward duo of junior Kris Joseph and senior Rick Jackson have been good, but not great, and freshman center Fab Melo, who was supposed to be a beast, has been non-existent. Junior point guard Scoop Jardine has had a horrible shooting season, but he is directing the team well with 6.0 assists. The losing streak seemed to be a case of things getting bad, and then snowballing for the Orangemen, but when they’re on, they can defend as well as anyone in the country, coming in 13th in field-goal defense and 30th in three-point defense.

Consistency has been the major enemy for the Orangemen, as they just can’t seem to get it together for a whole game on both ends of the floor. Another glaring weakness comes at the foul line, where the Orangemen are shooting 64.4%, which is 289th in the nation, and that is something that could come back to bite them in the postseason tournaments. Another problem for Syracuse is that they don’t seem to have that player that they’ve had in recent years that can put the team on his back. Lately, the likes of Carmelo Anthony, Jonny Flynn, Wes Johnson and even Andy Rautins have come through Syracuse. Joseph was supposed to be that guy, and while he has been good, he hasn’t been great often enough for the Orangemen. He’s going to have to raise his game at this point in the season, and this would be a good game to start.

How The Game Will Play Out

NCAA basketball betting odds should favor the Orangemen at home in this huge Big East contest, and the Hoyas have lost seven in a row in the Carrier Dome, and Syracuse is going to be hungry after losing their last two straight at home against Villanova and Seton Hall. The Hoyas have a perimeter-oriented attack with their guards, while the Orangemen are one of the top perimeter defenses in the country with their zone, so something has to give. The Hoyas have to get Vaughn involved on the inside, causing the zone to collapse so they can kick it out to Freeman, Wright and Clark. But Vaughn has to go up against Jackson, one of the best interior defenders in the country, and if the Hoyas have to depend on the outside shot, they could be in trouble against what should be a fired-up Syracuse team. Take the Orangemen in your online betting picks.
