Kansas vs Kansas State Betting Odds – Wildcats no match for Aldrich, Jayhawks

NCAA Basketball Odds: Pick Kansas

Kansas is still one of the online betting favorites to cut down the nets in Indianapolis this year, but the Jayhawks stumbled in their first big test, a loss at Tennessee. The Jayhawks will next face their rivals at Kansas State, and the Wildcats have shown they can play with the “big” teams. But with their star center leading the line, look for the Jayhawks to continue their dominance in this state rivalry.

WHAT: NCAA basketball betting
WHEN: Saturday, January 30, 7:00 PM ET
WHERE:Bramlage Coliseum, Manhattan, KS
KEY STAT:Kansas has won 13 of their last 14 at Kansas State

The Storyline: Kansas vs Kansas State Betting Odds
The No.2 Jayhawks (19-1, 5-0) have romped to five straight wins since losing at Tennessee, but it may be a bit worrying that Kansas lost in their first real test on the road this season, and that was to a depleted Vols squad. The No.11 Wildcats (17-3, 4-2) beat then-No.1 Texas, then lost to Oklahoma State, then nipped Baylor away from home, so which Kansas State team will we see? Kansas has a huge lead in the “Sunflower Showdown”, holding a 177-90 edge over their state rivals, including eight wins in their last 10 meetings.

Offensive Matchups: Kansas vs Kansas State Betting Odds
The Kansas offense is back on track since Tennessee, averaging 84.4 points in their last five games, and it’s no coincidence that the Jayhawks play better when Cole Aldrich gets the ball. The preseason All-American has four straight double-digit games, and he’s shooting 56.8% from the floor. If Aldrich is dominating inside the way we know he can, that opens up the floor for Kansas’ band of perimeter weapons.

The Wildcats are carried by the guard duo of Jacob Pullen and Denis Clemente, who combined for 42 points in Kansas State’s 76-74 win at Baylor. Jamar Samuels and Curtis Kelly share the inside scoring, but it’s Pullen and Clemente who get the Wildcats going. Kansas State is 14th in the nation in scoring, but they’re a miserable 277th in turnovers.

Betting Edge: Kansas

Defensive Kansas vs Kansas State Betting Odds
Sportsbook players should realize that Kansas may be as good defensively as they are on offense, coming in third in field-goal defense, 12th in rebound margin, 15th in blocks and 20th in steals. It all starts with Aldrich, who averages 3.6 blocks and is all over the glass. That gives the Jayhawks confidence to gamble, but they’re never really out of position, either. Freshman Xavier Henry leads the team with 1.9 steals.

Kansas State is 23rd nationally in rebounding, and they’ll have to be at the top of their game to hold of Aldrich and company. Samuels, Kelly and Dominique Sutton are the trio in charge of keeping Kansas off the glass. But the key may be their perimeter defense, which was very good at Baylor. The Wildcats are 98th in three-point defense, while Kansas is 13th in three-point percentage, and they’ll have to get on the Jayhawks’ shooters

Betting Edge: Kansas

Coaching Matchup: Kansas vs Kansas State Betting Odds
Bill Self is doing a good job in keeping this team focused with rumors of discontent on the squad, and now his next step is to get them a big road win. However, it shouldn’t be too hard to get the players up for a rivalry game, and Self’s even-handed approach is probably what the talented Jayhawks need right now.

Frank Martin’s team has four wins against ranked opponents this year, and he’s an excellent motivator when it comes to seizing the moment. Martin is a fiery competitor, quite the opposite of Self, so it’ll be an interesting contrast of styles on Saturday.

Betting Prediction: Kansas vs Kansas State Betting Odds
The Wildcats should be a slight favorite at the “Octagon of Doom”, which was given that name by Martin after Kansas State upset Texas. But Kansas hasn’t had much trouble in Manhattan, winning 13 of their last 14 there. The Tennessee loss woke up Kansas, as it tends to do to all good teams, and you’ll see a sharp Jayhawk squad on Saturday, led by Aldrich, who will show why he was a preseason All-American with a huge all-around performance.
