March Madness Online Betting – The Overrated Teams

Syracuse Orange

March Madness betting experts will certainly point out a lot of facts over the next few weeks as the 2012 NCAA Tournament approaches. They’ll provide lots of historical nuggets for schools, conferences, coaches, and seeds, giving you a lot of information to analyze as you prepare to make some educated plays. When you do your homework and assess your sports bet on this year’s NCAA Tournament, you will want to value some insights more than others. Well, Syracuse offers a very strong reason to pick against it when March Madness gets underway. The Orange should get through the first weekend, but as a No. 1 seed, they’re supposed to get to the Final Four this year. Don’t bet on it… literally.

Syracuse has made three Final Fours under head coach Jim Boeheim, but Boeheim has coached the program since 1975. In 37 years, three Final Fours doesn’t feel quite as impressive as it does for a coach like Billy Donovan, who made three Final Fours at a much earlier point in his coaching career. Moreover, Boeheim’s Syracuse teams haven’t made an Elite Eight more than once since 1996. Indeed, in the past 16 years, the Orange’s sole journey to the Elite Eight came in 2003, the year Boeheim won his only national championship. Why has Syracuse not made more Elite Eights and Final Fours, you ask? Here’s the money stat relative to the Orange: Boeheim has lost five times in the Sweet 16 to an opponent seeded at least four notches lower. This happened in 1979, 1980, 1984, 1990, and 2010. To put a finer point on things, Boeheim has never reached the Final Four as a No. 1 seed. He reached it as a No. 2 seed in 1987, a No. 4 seed in 1996, and as a No. 3 seed in 2003. Syracuse is overrated. Believe it.

Michigan State

The college basketball betting experts who have followed the sport for the past 15 years will tell you, correctly, that Tom Izzo is the second-best head coach of that time span, right behind Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski. Izzo, the Michigan State head coach, has had a masterful run in East Lansing, guiding the Spartans to six Final Fours in a 12-season span from 1999 through 2010. He’s enabled MSU to overachieve this season, reaching what will likely be a No. 2 seed for the NCAA Tournament. Based on the Spartans’ revival after a lousy 2011 season, a lot of pundits are high on the Spartans.

However, be warned: This team encounters prolonged scoring droughts. It does not have the dependable perimeter scorer it needs to be a complete offensive team. The defense is there and the rebounding is strong, but Michigan State is likely to have at least one bad game at the offensive end of the floor, a game it will not be able to overcome. The Spartans are a definite Final Four contender, but their chances of winning four games are not as strong as you might initially think.

A lot of college basketball experts are high on Marquette as a sleeper team, but don’t buy the hype. The Golden Eagles are undersized and have a thin bench due to multiple injuries suffered during the season. They have overachieved, much as Michigan State has, but they play a lot of close games and will not match up well with opponents that have a lot of interior size.
