March Madness Online Betting – Stage Set For East, West Third Round Matchups

Posted by Washington Tucker on 2/10/2014 5:11:54 AM

The March Madness betting tournament round of 64 got underway on Thursday, and for the East and West regions in particular, it went exactly the way it was supposed to according to the sports betting seeds. There was not a single upset to account for between the two regions, setting up some interesting matchups for the second round, with each of the teams that advanced to the third round very capable of moving even further.

(5) New Mexico vs. Louisville (4)
Saturday, 9:40 PM ET

Neither the Lobos nor Cardinals had any problem taking care of their opponents in the round of 64, each winning by seven points to advance to the third round. Louisville controlled the tempo and never look flustered against Davidson, with Peyton Siva looking absolutely dominant throughout the game, while Drew Gordon had a game-high 18 as New Mexico held off a couple of strong pushes from Long Beach State. If Louisville continues to play with the confidence that it showed in the second round, and their guards continue to attack the rim, then Louisville will advance. The Cardinals aren’t a strong three-point shooting team, but against Davidson they proved they don’t have to be.

(6) Murray State vs. (3) Marquette
Saturday, 5:15 PM ET

The Golden Eagles absolutely put on a show against BYU in their tournament opener, pulling away early on before finishing strong for a 20-point victory. Marquette was considered a legitimate sleeper pick heading in to this tournament, and with the success that previous No. 3 seeds have had, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they went on an extended run. Murray State should be satisfied with a close win over Colorado State that got them to the third round, but that’s as far as they will be going in this sports bet tournament.

(1) Syracuse vs. (8) Kansas State
Saturday, 12:15 PM ET

Before we get to the Orange in the East region, it makes sense to acknowledge a performance like Rodney McGruder’s in the second round, after he scored 30 of 70 points for Kansas State in a close win over Southern. Miss. McGruder will once again be the go-to player for the Wildcats against the top seed from the East region, and given the way that Syracuse performed against UNC-Asheville, this could be a legitimate sleeper spot. The Orange were very fortunate in that game to get some calls their way late in the contest, and unless they play a lot better in this game, they won’t be able to survive against a talented and hungry Kansas State team.

(5) Vanderbilt vs. (4) Wisconsin
Saturday, 6:10 PM ET

Vanderbilt gave everybody a preview of what it was capable of doing in the SEC tournament, and after sending Harvard home in the first round, will now try and do the same to an erratic Wisconsin team. The Badgers have been known to go hot and cold on offense and struggled in the Big Ten title tournament, so even though they handled Montana with their tough defense, they are not the clear favorite here. The Commodores have played strong ball at both ends of the floor, and are one of the hottest teams in the country right now heading in to this game.
