March Madness Southwest Bracket Betting – The Southeast Bracket Is Full Of Upsets And Mismatches

Posted by Washington Tucker on 2/6/2014 2:32:00 AM

There’s a late-breaking story that has affected the nature of the Southwest Region bracket. The number three seed in this region is suddenly worth dropping from your Final Four.

NCAA basketball betting: Games On Thursday, March 17

(4) Louisville vs. (13) Morehead State

If there’s a “best player you don’t know about” award in this year’s NCAA Tournament, it would go to Morehead State forward Kenneth Faried. The 6-8, 225-pounder is averaging 17.6 points and 14.5 rebounds per game. He’s simply a beast in the low post and will be very hard for Louisville to handle. With that said, Louisville is by far the more complete team, with better guards, better defense, and the kind of coach – Rick Pitino – who doesn’t get outfoxed in March Madness competition. Faried will impress NBA scouts and national observers, but Louisville will get the win.

March Madness betting upset special (5) Vanderbilt vs. (12) Richmond

Here’s your 5-12 upset to pick in the NCAAs. Vanderbilt, in each of its last two NCAA Tournament appearances in 2008 and 2010, was a No. 4 seed. In each of those two games, the Commodores got bounced from the Big Dance in their first time on the floor. Vanderbilt is a shaky team in tournament play because its weakest position is point guard. Brad Tinsley is simply not strong enough or dynamic enough to break down defenses or get into the lane. This is why Vanderbilt settles for too many perimeter jumpers and ordinarily fails to get the foul shots it needs to put opponents at a disadvantage. Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings is viewed as one of the best offensive minds in the country, but when your point guard is a liability, coaching acumen becomes limited as a factor. Richmond plays patient and prudent halfcourt basketball and should be able to keep this game close until the final horn. Vanderbilt can’t be trusted to grab the key rebound or make the key shot to win a 50-50 game. Pick the No. 12 seed in the upset.

Sports betting: Games On Friday, March 18

(1) Kansas vs. (16) Boston University

This will be a typical 1-16 game. In other words, it won’t be remotely close. Next…

(8) UNLV vs. (9) Illinois

The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels are an underachieving team. The Illinois Fighting Illini make UNLV look like a very successful and productive team. Yes, Illinois is the mother of all underachievers. Illini point guard Demetri McCamey is probably the single biggest underachiever in the entire United States. There’s a good reason why McCamey has not won a single NCAA Tournament game in his first three seasons as Illinois’ point guard. Don’t trust him to find a way to break through in his fourth season as the floor leader for the Illini. Pick UNLV by all means.

(6) Georgetown vs. (11) Play-In Winner: USC or Virginia Commonwealth

The key to this game is simple: Georgetown point guard Chris Wright, the most valuable Hoyas of them all, returns after missing more than two weeks with a broken finger on his non-shooting hand. If Wright is on, Georgetown becomes a very tough team to beat. However, it’s hard to think that Wright will be very effective. Take the No. 11 seed in this game, especially if it’s Virginia Commonwealth, which features better guard play than USC does.

(3) Purdue vs. (14) St. Peter’s

This game should be won by Purdue, playing in Chicago. However, if you’re looking ahead in your Southwest Region bracket, don’t take the Boilermakers to go to the Final Four. They just lost backup point guard Kelsey Barlow, a player whose numbers weren’t spectacular but who provided this team with at least a little depth. Now, Purdue’s starters are going to be expected to play longer minutes, and that could catch up with the Boilermakers down the line, probably in the regional semifinals against Notre Dame.

(7) Texas A&M vs. (10) Florida State

The betting advice is simple here: Though this is an evenly-matched game, Texas A&M has won its last five opening-round NCAA Tournament games. Florida State has not won an NCAA Tournament game since 1998. Trust A&M more than Florida State, even though this game should be close until the final horn.

(2) Notre Dame vs. (15) Akron

This is a mismatch. Notre Dame deserved to be a No. 1 seed in the West Region. It will drill Akron by a large margin.
