March Madness Underdog Betting - The Underdogs

San Diego State

March Madness betting oddsmakers won’t put too much stock in the Aztecs, because their best team played last season and their better teams will play in the future. This year was supposed to be a rebuilding year for San Diego State, which lost D.J. Gay to graduation and star forward Kawhi Leonard to the NBA. The Aztecs were a very powerful team near the basket last year. Their defensive ability was considerable, their rebounding prowess off the charts. They lacked a pure shooter but were so imposing in every other aspect of competition that they were able to pile-drive the ball to the rim, pound the glass, and not worry about hitting 17-foot jump shots. Only in the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 round did the lack of shooting catch up with the Aztecs. This year, SDSU is a limited team with only one reliable scoring option, Jamaal Franklin. Guard James Ruhon is the best shooter on the team, but he has a very hard time creating his own shot with the dribble. The Aztecs don’t have the tools of a team that can make a deep run. They will be legitimately seen as an upstart, not a favorite.

Notre Dame

When you do your homework and assess your sports bet on this year’s NCAA Tournament, you will identify Notre Dame as a favorite in its round of 64 game, but probably not in any other game. The Irish have cobbled together wins with a patchwork lineup after their best scorer, forward Tom Abromaitis, was lost for the season with a gruesome and substantial injury. Notre Dame wins by playing hard on defense and using the low-post strength of big man Jack Cooley, the team’s one particularly reliable performer. This is a relatively slow and limited team, however. It does not have the speed to keep up with teams who play up-tempo basketball. Notre Dame had a far better and more balanced team in the 2011 NCAA Tournament, and the Fighting Irish were still run out of the building by Florida State in the round of 32. It would be very hard to pick Notre Dame to win in the round of 32 or any round thereafter. This is a team that will surprise the experts if it makes its way to the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament this year.

Florida

The college basketball betting experts who have followed this season from its very beginnings in early November until these early days of March are aware that the calculus has substantially shifted with respect to the Florida Gators. A Final Four favorite before the season began, Florida has slid downward in terms of its projected NCAA Tournament seed. Moreover, the Gators will enter the tournament without rebounder and defender Will Yeguete, a high-energy performer who gave the team some much-needed muscle and toughness near the rim. Florida is now a thin team and a relatively soft team. It’s also undersized and unable to do much if it can’t shoot extremely well from three-point range. This is a team that started the year with high hopes for four or five tournament wins. Now, it would be lucky to get two.
