Marquette Georgetown Betting: Marquette, Georgetown Square Off In Big East Battle

The Big East season is just beginning to get into gear. Marquette, though, needs a boost as it prepares to take on a surging Georgetown squad in Washington, D.C.

Marquette Golden Eagles @ Georgetown Hoyas - Wednesday, January 4

Why Marquette Will Win

The college football betting  experts who are winding up their season are trying to make the quick transition to college basketball. When they get around to following the realm of roundball, they’d realize that the Big East Conference is as bunched up as it’s ever been. The 16-team conference involves so much competitive parity that, from game to game and night to night, there’s very little daylight between teams. So many programs are relatively even on the merits. Why can’t Marquette pull a slight upset of Georgetown?

In three of the last four seasons, Marquette has won at least one NCAA Tournament game. Marquette doesn’t dominate opponents, but the Golden Eagles usually find a way to make their finesse approach work. There’s some genuine resilience in this program, a fact underscored by Marquette’s ability to make the 2010 NCAA Tournament despite losing multiple overtime games and - at one point in the regular season – dropping five games in a seven-game stretch by an average of just two points. Marquette also clawed into the Sweet 16 last year as a No. 11 seed, proving how resourceful it can be when the chips are down. Marquette was the last team from the Big East to qualify for the 2011 edition of the NCAAs. Marquette plays in a 16-team Big East that offers a few breathers now and then, but the Golden Eagles have to face at least six or seven quality foes each season as well. In terms of assessing Marquette to this point in the 2011-2012 campaign, the Golden Eagles snapped Wisconsin’s 23-game homecourt winning streak by topping the Badgers on Dec. 3, 61-54. This is not a complete team, but it is certainly capable of defending against Georgetown, a team that scored only 49 points against Providence this past Saturday.

Why Georgetown Will Win

When you do your homework and assess your sports bet on this game, you’ll find it hard to go against Georgetown. The Hoyas might not be playing at a tremendously high level, but they are certainly competing at a very high level. Coach John Thompson III is getting his players to max out at the defensive end of the floor, even if their halfcourt offense is noticeably unreliable. Georgetown pulled off a gritty, blue-collar 71-68 win at previously unbeaten Louisville last Wednesday, and although the Hoyas scored only 49 points this past weekend against Providence, they held the Friars to only 40, scoring a nine-point win in a game that had “letdown” written all over it. Georgetown won’t be a model of consistency throughout the course of the season, but if the Hoyas remain committed to defense, they’ll remain a factor in the Big East. Aiding Georgetown’s cause in this game is the fact that Marquette has lost two of its last four games, getting whacked by LSU and Vanderbilt from the SEC. Marquette’s offense failed to score 60 points in each of those games, meaning that the Hoyas have a great chance to clamp down on the Golden Eagles.

Who Will Win

It’s not a slam-dunk by any means, but Georgetown is playing better and fighting harder than Marquette at the moment. Marquette might take a few weeks to hit its stride. This game’s a home contest for Georgetown, so give the Hoyas the nod.
