2014 College Basketball Betting – Four Likely Sweet 16 Upsets

Posted by Washington Tucker on 3/26/2014 9:40:54 PM

1- UCLA Over Florida

The Florida Gators have won 28 straight games. You have to be really good to do something like that, but you also need a lot of luck as well. Florida came very close to losing at Arkansas in January, but the Razorbacks missed a late free throw which enabled Florida to send the game into overtime and then win it. Florida blew a 16-point lead against Kentucky in the championship game of the SEC Tournament on March 16 in Atlanta, but Kentucky committed a turnover on its final possession of the game when trailing by one point. Florida has somehow been able to live on the right side of things without an interruption of any kind. Could this be the game in which the bounces don’t go the Gators’ way? UCLA is a very talented team, one that can score against Florida’s very tough defense. If the Bruins get off to a really good start, you could see Florida try to shoot too many three-point shots. The Gators can be impatient on offense, and that’s what UCLA is banking on in this game. The Bruins are playing their best basketball of the season in March, when it matters most. This team is surging, and it is going to give Florida all sorts of trouble in Memphis for the South Regional.

2 - Tennessee Over Michigan

The Tennessee Volunteers are a number 11 seed in the Midwest Regional, but they have the talent of a number four seed or something close to that. Jordan McRae is as dangerous an offensive player as anyone in the Southeastern Conference. McRae has unlimited range, and he can hit shots while being off balance. There’s no shot he can’t hit. In addition to McRae, the Vols have a powerful center, Jarnell Stokes, who can bully opposing post players near the basket and who will enjoy a definite advantage in terms of strength when matched against Michigan’s Jordan Morgan. Tennessee’s role players are also playing their best right now, which should make Michigan very worried. The Wolverines are a great three-point shooting team, but if their threes do not drop, they’re going to have a serious problem in this game. Tennessee has a much better chance than a lot of people might first think.

3 - Baylor Over Wisconsin

It wouldn’t even be that big of an upset, but Baylor did finish seventh in the Big 12 this season. The Bears were several games under .500 in their conference at one point during the season. Wisconsin did have one very bad stretch in the month of January, but other than that, the Badgers have been tremendous this season. Baylor has been the study in volatility. The Bears could easily come through here; it’s just that Wisconsin is the more consistent team. The bigger truth, though, is that Baylor has a lot of top talent; basketball analysts just haven’t seen Baylor put its talents to use the same way Wisconsin has. If Baylor wins, the more athletic team will have won.

4 – San Diego State over Arizona

The Wildcats are seven-point favorites, which is pretty substantial at this stage of the NCAA tournament. If San Diego State wins, it would come as a shock to many people. Yet, the Aztecs are so good on defense and on the glass that they could win this game. Arizona is one cold shooting night from an exit, and that could realistically happen.
