Portland State Seattle Betting – Pacific Northwest Foes Play Out The String

Posted by Washington Tucker on 2/6/2014 2:09:02 AM

The heart of the March Madness push is found elsewhere in the United States, but Portland State and Seattle will certainly give it the old college try when they meet on March 10.

NCAA basketball betting: Portland State Vikings @ Seattle Redhawks

Why To Bet On Portland State

March Madness betting experts will be focusing on other games when the conference tournaments kick into high gear, but a part of the March 10 slate will include this clash between Portland State, of the Big Sky Conference, and Independent Seattle University. Portland State’s main advantage lies in the fact that Seattle is not a proven team. The Redhawks are trying to find their sea legs near the Puget Sound in the Emerald City. Coach Cameron Dollar is winding down the second season of what is certainly a long-term rebuilding project in a talent-rich city. The greater Seattle area has produced a lot of highly-skilled NBA-level players over the years: Jamal Crawford, Jason Terry, Nate Robinson, and several other notable names played their high-school ball in or near Seattle, so Dollar – the former assistant to current University of Washington coach Lorenzo Romar – is plying his trade in a place that offers access to blue-chip stars. However, Seattle has not built up its brand name as the program tries to return to the elite status it once owned. Elgin Baylor led Seattle University to the 1958 Final Four, and the Redhawks – when they were named the Chieftains – were the only team to beat Texas Western when the Miners won the 1966 NCAA national championship. It’s going to take a long time, though, for this legacy to be rebuilt. Seattle is only 11-18 on the season (with a March 5 date at Idaho still on the slate) and can tout nothing more than wins at Virginia and against Oregon State. The Redhawks don’t possess imposing size or brawn near the basket, and their depth isn’t what Dollar would like. Portland State has a chance to expose these deficiencies and walk out of Key Arena with a win.

Why To Bet On Seattle

The sports betting reason for tabbing the Redhawks is that their opponent doesn’t bring very much to this dance in the former home of the Seattle Sonics. Portland State will wind up in the bottom half of the Big Sky this year, losing a double-digit amount of conference games. The Vikings just don’t have the size that elite teams possess. Sure, Seattle isn’t exactly formidable near the tin, but Portland State isn’t uniquely equipped to take advantage of that fact. PSU’s best rebounder, Chehales Tapscott, is a 6-5 forward who snags 8.3 boards per game by dint of supreme effort, above-average footwork, and a nose for the ball built on good instincts. Seattle’s Alex Jones isn’t an all-world post player, but the Redhawks’ main man in the pivot should be able to hold his own on the glass and limit the Vikings to one shot per trip. None of PSU’s prime players go beyond 6-8, meaning that Seattle is not going to be overpowered in this contest.

How The Game Will Play Out

The online betting summation of this contest is simply that neither team is going to hurt the other near the paint. Seattle, playing at home in its season finale, is likely to have a little more juice in the tank than a Portland State team that will have weirdly finished the Big Sky Conference Tournament at this point in time. Why Portland State is even playing this game is a mystery; don’t expect the Vikings to be very inspired when tip-off time arrives in Seattle.
