Ranking The Four Number One Seeds In NCAA Tournament

Posted by Washington Tucker on 3/20/2014 9:33:35 PM

The NCAA Tournament is set to begin soon, meaning the upsets will begin rolling in and brackets will get busted. While many fans love to watch the upsets and Cinderella teams make their run, it’s equally important to find out which number one seeded team is actually the best. Even though the best team in the tournament may prove to not be a one-seed, here are the ranking of the four number one seeds in the NCAA Tournament.

4. Wichita State Shockers

They’re the only undefeated team in the nation yet they round out the list as the worst one-seed in the big dance. I expect Wichita State to win a handful of games, but they don’t have the characteristics of a championship team and haven’t played a tough schedule compared to the other top-ranked squads. Senior forward Cleanthony Early is a legitimate talent and does a nice job leading the team in scoring, but he isn’t a physical force down low and as early as their second game against the Kentucky Wildcats the Shockers could be overmatched in the paint. The Shockers win games with outside shooting and defense, however, and should find themselves in the Sweet 16 before running into any trouble.

3. Arizona Wildcats

Although they were ranked first in the nation earlier this year, the Arizona Wildcats still have much to prove. First off they play in the Pac-12, which although is a major conference, doesn’t have the same caliber of teams as the ACC or Big 10. The Wildcats had trouble with two conference teams lately and if they were to bow out in the second our third round I would hardly be surprised. They are without forward Brandon Ashley, meaning freshmen Aaron Gordon must take another step forward and solidify a post game, which is simply too much to ask at this point in the season. Arizona does have a somewhat easy road to the Final Four, but they may have trouble with Oklahoma State in the second round or even conference foe Oregon if they make it that far.

2. Virginia Cavaliers

The Virginia Cavaliers were the most surprising one-seed on Selection Sunday, yet they come in as my second ranked top-seeded squad. They play solid hard-nosed defense every game, and if a team is having a bad shooting night the Cavaliers will take advantage and emerge victorious. Their offense on the other hand could be their downfall as they like to play a slow-paced game, meaning fewer shots are taken, and without a go-to scorer they have trouble putting the ball in the hoop at times. Virginia has beaten plenty of highly ranked teams this season, and although they haven’t gotten the same attention as other one seeds they should still be expected to make a deep run in the tourney.

  1. Florida Gators

The Florida Gators come in as my top-ranked one-seed because they play defense just like Virginia, but have senior leadership and offensive talent as well. Senior forward Patric Young is often overlooked because of his 11 points and six rebounds per game averages, yet he’s an imposing figure on both ends of the court and at 6-9” can guard any post player. Their shooters are Casey Prather and Michael Frazier II, and freshmen Chris Walker is the x-factor as he came in highly recruited but has played just a handful of games because of an early season suspension. He isn’t lighting up the box score, but at 6-10” he can guard anyone and has the upside to carry this Gators team if need be.
